Incase you didn't already know SETI@home is a program which searches for Alien signals from blocks of radio data recorded from a radio telescope ,which you download from their server. These data blocks are fairly small ,350k odd and won't take long to download on any modem.
Once you have the data block you can then go offline.
You can set SETI to run either as just a screensaver or have it running in the background

So does anyone want to join THE search?
If you want to join the search & our team then check out my sig.

We've got many knowledgeable people in our forum section willing to help in many PC probs ,as well as SETI stuff.
We've got lots of stats ,team & individual & we also have our own Unreal Tourn server for Team members

Thanks

Doh! forgot to mention it makes for a good heat/stabilty testing program as it will max out your cpu (if nothing else 'big' is running).

It also makes for a good benchmark for a combination of cpu,chipset,L2 cache & memory performance

I was just wondering, if my computer is the one that helps detect the alien signal, do I get to name the alien race? (This is actually a serious question, Thanks! :) )

I don't know about naming but you would get listed as the co-dicoverer:)

Purely down to personal preference ,some people would rather search for Alien signals than crack an encryption code :)

Thanks :) ,all for Team Anandtech ;)

I sent the question via the page Sukhoi gave me. I am going to join either way, just thought it might be Koo to be able to name a whole race (never got to do that before for some reason :p )

I personally run SETI because of the closer space between the teams. The RC5 team I believe is #3 overall, and it's just a matter of time until they get to the 2nd spot. On the other hand, the Team AnandTech SETI team is currently #21, and we're in a nice little race with HW France.

Hahah sure the SETI program sounds good, just up to the point till when it's your computer that discovers alien life. Then that's when
5 ex-marines and one smoking guy dressed in black suits and sunglasses, drive up to your house in a black, unmarked crown victoria. They then proceed to knock down your door, confiscate your computer and take you to an undisclosed millitary base which is located 15 stories below the earth in antartica! Wait...this plot seems familiar.....

Impact55, my reason is that whereas RC5 is just a useless competition (it's been proven that distributed computing can be used to crack a code), SETI has a purpose, which is searching for intelligent life

SETI@Home is a very interesting program, but unfortunately I don't run it, or RC5 for that matter. My computer is just too slow, and I don't spend all that much time on it, so it wouldn't be worthwhile. If I had a 500+MHz machine, I would probably just leave it on all the time and have it run SETI and RC5, but this isn't the case, so good luck to you all.

BTW, I would join Team AnandTech if I were cracking/searching :)

Even though we are in 3rd in RC5 and almost ahead of the macs now, we still have a long way to go to beat slashdot. We are gaining on them, but not as fast as we are on the macs.

Thanks for the potential joining ;):)

What PC do you have BTW ,I could give you some idea of how long it would take you to do a WU in SETI.Every little bit counts ,we have many members that do about 1WU/week

Sorry, but not if you just have 1 processor. Some people with dual processors run SETI on 1 processor, and RC5 on the other. I personally joined the Team AnandTech SETI team rather than the RC5 team because the SETI team is much smaller and IMHO could use the help more.

Yes, you can run both simultaneously.

My system is a Dell OptiPlex 466/Le. In other words, a crap-ass 486 with Pentium Overdrive at 83MHz and 24MB of EDO RAM.

I can't run the Windows version of SETI@Home, because I don't have 32MB of RAM and it just will not allow itself to run. :( The WinNT version runs, but it would take FOREVER to finish a WU, and I want to be able to use my computer when it is on. ;)

RC5, well I can run that, it would take a long time to crack shiat, but it would be pointless, I'm not really interested in cracking code... so when I get my Duron system I'll set up SETI@Home, and don't worry, I'll join up with team AnandTech :D

Well searching for alien life is a hell of allot cooler than doing RC5, which is why i joined up a few days.

Is it normal for a celeron @ 458 to do 1 unit in 19h 39m ?
