i havea a new XP 1700 and a alpha pal 8045 HS the thing i want to know is i am giong to try to clean off the surface of the core and the heatsink before i apply artic silver II is it ok to just use alcohol to clean it ???

then just apply the artic silver to the HS and rub it is with a plastic bag over my finger and wiping off the excess with a clean rag....is that about the same to do to the core or am i just supposed to place a thin layer on the core after cleaning and then seat it on the board and then finally install the HS

thanks to all who reply

Just apply a paper thin layer on the core. The HS way is right. I used a littel finger nail polish remover to clean the bottom of my Alpha. Didn't bother with the CPU though. Well just make sure that ASII is on really thin!

thanks for the info MoFunk....a quick question just for my curiousity.....i know but reading that you are to only apply a thin layer of AS II why is that...what does it do if you were to put a thicker layer on ??? how is that adverse ???

thanks for the tips though and pointing me in the right direction

The primarily objective of ASII is to transfer the heat from the CPU to the HSF ASAP. ASII will fill-up the microscopic "pits" at the bottom of ur uneven HSF which is occupied by AIR. As teh "pits" & the gap between the HSF & CPU is small...only a small amount of ASII is use.

If u put a very thick layer of ASII, the heat transfer rates will detoriate as ASII now act as an insulator which slowdown the heat transfer.

thanks so much for the information "Wind" i guess it is just simple theory of heat transfer and i just wanted to make sure and not ASSUME anything 🙂 again i appreciate the info and quick reply
