Next gen game F.E.A.R. (current ETA 10/4/05) apparently taxes video hardware to an extent previously unseen.

A relatively commonplace setting, 12X9 4X8X, reduces the 6800GT, X850XTPE, and the X800Xl to an average below 30fps- something few if any titles can accomplish.

Ironically, F.E.A.R. is GITG ATI funded title and the two ATI cards benched take last and second to last place in all 4X8X benches.

If the performance in these benches holds true when the game is launched in three months, only those with 7800GTXs or high end SLI rigs will be able to play at settings currently taken for granted.

:Q Wow... does the game look that good to justify those numbers? Or is this bad programming?

My 6800GT SLI is looking shoddy now. :brokenheart:

Yes but can you still go online and kick ass at 1024x768 in UT2003?

This game is basically unplayable on any ATI card at modern settings
A more appropriate statement would be the beta is unplayable, correct? That's the impression I got from the linked page anyway.

Why shoddy? You take it as a given you're going to be 10% slower than a 6800U SLI, 45fps at 12X9 4X8X at this game is living LARGE.

You're among the people with four rigs that can actually play this game at a decent setting, nothing to be sad about. 6800GT SLI is kicking ass and taking names, single high end cards from last gen are getting kicked to the curb?

Errrr, yeah, the final version will surely run three times as fast! (good luck) It's release date is 8/2, one month away.

They're holding back all the DX9 2b stuff for the last month before release, then they'll spring it on us as a happy gift!

Would still be cool to have 60+FPS at 1600x1200 though. ;) Maybe framerates will improve by the time retail hits the shelves.

Jesus Christ. I didn't think that engine would be that heavy - it certainly doesn't LOOK good enough to be that heavy - it's not much of an improvement over Doom 3, but it apparently runs like kludge.

Simple, just turn the 4AA off. Anti Alaising or whatever its called puts the hurt on, and does little or nothing IMO, I can turn it on or off in HL2 and DOOM3 and can't tell the difference (my eyes aren't as good as they used to be though:()

But then again, who stops to smell the eye candy when your blasting combine or chainsawing zombies:)

If they expect to sell any it will.

See above- due out in a month. If you think it's changing much in 4 weeks, LOL.

You were probably saying "No way Splinter Cell will be SM3/SM1.1 only! It will never sell any!" until it launched too.

It's interesting FEAR is another Soft Shadows game as well- with usable soft shadows up to 12X9 4X AA on a 7800SLI rig.

a 7800GTX @ 1600x1200 is only pulling 45?

Big deal...

That's not impressive at all.. Not for a brand new $600 release..

granted the last gen cards are struggling ( especially ATI ) 45 is nothing to be excited about..

I wonder why they only benched with 4x AA and 8x AF...

Performance Preview we clearly saw areas where the 7800 GTX was CPU-limited we can?t say that for F.E.A.R., although it is possible that the situation could change between now and October, F.E.A.R.?s possible release date.

Where the hell did you get 4 weeks and 8/2?

I'm sure glad I went out and bought a 7800GTX

Either this games coding sucks, or we are definitely OVER paying for hardware..

LOL-
Of course you didn't explain that this was at 16X12, and the fps are 12 vs 19, so that 7fps represents a 58% improvement.

The whole point is that the game screenshots don't look impressive one bit, and dropping $600 for the 7800( when either 12 vs. 19fps are garbage ) for this type of performance would not be meritted..

And what about the release date? Where did you get 8/2?

Hell I might WANT to play F.E.A.R., but it looks like I won't be for quite a while. Nah I probably won't...unless its multiplayer is amazing. Usually I hate single player, except for HL2 and the Quake series.

Really? I'd be way more excited about the 45 than the unplayable fps any of the last gen cards got?

I really wouldn't be excited about playing the game period, let alone @ 45 fps after I JUST dropped $600 the other day..

The game does not look impressive AT ALL.

Check out my Best Buy link?

So Besy Buy is the best source for release dates?

I would be more inclined to believe FiringSquad and a october release date.
