Do you go to the movies? How often?

I spend my Saturday nights in an MMO rather then spending my money at say the movies. Its $15 for ever evolving experience. Maybe I don't play for story. Maybe I enjoy playing with other people or working together for an end goal.

Saying that $15 a month is stupid is stupid. By your thinking spending $9 on a movie ticket that you get to see once is stupid. Why not wait and BUY the movie so you can play it again? Maybe because you like to go with people or because you LIKE seeing it in a theater.

Different strokes for different folks.

There's only one MMO remotely worth playing: EVE Online.

Now, a little rant. Feel free to ignore....

That being said I don't understand why anyone would want to waste their money on MMOS. The very concept is ridiculous and dumb.

1)MMOs are designed such that you can never "win" or truly "get somewhere" there is always that unachievable "true leetness" factor floating somewhere like a dream you are striving for but you can never get there. There will always be people better than you in any MMO. The people may be playing(correction, grinding) much more than you, or they may simply be spoiled rich with nowhere to spend their money that comes too easy to them, so they will spend it to buy the best items, gear, etc, and these folks will still ultimately pwn you in PvP and laugh at you calling you a "gay ass n00b". You may argue, that you are playing "just for fun" and you dont care if you'll get anywhere in the MMO that you are playing. But who are we kidding here?! If you didn't want to get somewhere, you'd quit a long time ago.

You'll find this in any multi-player game. Luckily in both MMO's and regular online games you can chose who to play with.

2)MMOs are designed to suck you in such that you waste your whole day, maybe even your whole life playing. Many quests, raids, teamups work in such a way where you cannot "save" before you finish a task, forcing you to play several hours at a time.

Isn't any game designed this way. Or do Non-MMO developers not want you to play their games. Using WoW as an example you can save quite easily. In fact it does so for you in every raid and upper level dungeon as you progress.

3)It's just STUPID to pay $15 every month as a "fee" for something you cannot OWN forever. Think about it.... Imagine... how many games you can buy on STEAM for $15. and these are not just some shitty games we are talking about here. There are many GOOD games available at this price. These games are there to stay with you FOREVER offering countless hours of entertainment until you burn out. And you may come back to them in the future anytime you wish and play for FREE. Also, if you multiply $15 by 12 months in a year you get $180!!!! That's a brand new mid to high end video card or cpu or a spacious hard drive every year! I don't know about you, but something like this is a hell of a lot more important to me than paying an MMO. These computer parts I mentioned will allow me to enjoy games and more for several years, while you can enjoy your MMO for only one year at the same price. This same $180 can go toward a gym membership, a new bike, plenty of food, or clothing. Things much more important than an mmo that you cannot even "keep".

Paying money for entertainment. Not a new concept. I don't see how a monthly fee is any different then any other form of payment. Hell if I really enjoy playing an MMO more then any other game what good will all those new computer parts do for you.

4)You cannot sell your MMO account. To me this idea alone is ludicrous. Isn't it "I" that paid the money to the subscription? Isn't it I that put months, maybe years of hard work into that account? Why then should the game company have full rights to it? I understand how the sale of individual virtual items should be illegal, but the sale of accounts should be allowed.

That would just add to you first problem. The ability to sell and buy accounts would really destroy the game for everyone. You'll have half of the players just trying to make money while the other half with more money then brains.

Sadly I cannot escape from EVE Online now when I have an account. I cannot sell the account and I cannot stop playing it either because it's "there" and I cannot just ignore it and pretend it's not there. I canceled my subscription, but I know I'll come back to this damned game again at some point. That being said I have sworn never to start another MMO ever again unless I can sell the account.

I agree, and you have a point, but...

I don't go to theaters much, unless it's for the purpose of laying moves on a girl in the dark or to see an awesome movie like Gladiator on the big screen. Also, even if I see a movie once in a great while, it's still different from spending $15 on an MMO - EVERY MONTH.

Look, I'm sorry if my sentence with the word dumb in in sounded offensive. I didn't intend to call anyone here "dumb". I did state that this was my little rant, and that this is IMO. Still I think that paying for MMOs is dumb.

Also, bringing in the social aspect of it like talking to people online and having fun with them is a poor excuse. Isn't it better to do your socializing in RL? Then again, if these people are someone you know well, it could be a different story and I may be wrong...

I see where you are going with this, but then we have an issue of "fleeting" entertainment vs. lasting entertainment. I don't know about you but I don't subscribe to a cable service or satellite dish, I try not to play MMOs anymore, don't use netflix... Basically I try not to pay for anything I cannot keep unless I really have to. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

A few exceptions to this are cell phone service, appt rent and car insurance. Here I don't have a choice. Well actually I do have a choice always, but then in this particular case the quality of my life would be very poor.

You're not obligated to pay the monthly fee "EVERY" month. You can generally get a crapload of entertainment value for that $15. At least insofar as time spent with the game. People do all sorts of other stuff with their money for the sake of entertainment. Are you a drinker? Do you spend $15 or more a month on alcohol? You just piss that out after you're done with it. How about bowling? Driving around some go-karts?

MMOs require servers to run. MMOs are constantly updated, patched, etc., better than pretty much any "pay for it once" kinda game.

I have gotten fairly involved with Everquest, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online, and only mildly involved with WoW. At any time, I could choose to reactivate my account and play again, and my characters will still be available. I haven't played any of them in many months.

I just think the whole "paying for an MMO is stupid" argument is pretty flawed.

Well I guess its just a matter of perspective. If your just against paying monthly for things all together then that's the way it is.

The only issue that I have is the negative connotation people give to the term MMO's. When it comes down to it they're just another genre of games the same as any other.

I find that very hard to believe.
 Why?
