I will be working in the financial, not the tech sector. My background is mortgage banking. No job lined up yet, this is still in the preliminary phase.

There's already too many people in the area, you could try the other side of the state? North Korea though Spokane was nice enough to invade.*

*Actually large amount of Russians.

That's another possibility. We like the idea of the Pacific Northwest, but if not Seattle something else in the region might be ok as well. We've also toyed with the idea of moving to Colorado, Denver specifically. Mainly, we want out of the south, don't like the idea of Texas, and want somewhere with a lot of out door recreational activities.

Because there was an airbase there that had B52s fueled and loaded with nukes for a while. Probably some silos, too.

Traffic is getting worse and worse. Drivers there really do suck more than they do elsewhere. Nobody signals, nobody knows how to drive in the rain... if your kids are near driving age, be prepared to bite your fingernails to the quick while you're teaching them.
NOTHING like east coast drivers. Seriously. By big city standards, Seattle drivers do OK.

The traffic is pretty awful, though.

Portland, Boise, and Denver might all be feasible alternatives. I am moving away from Houston, myself, to the Bay Area, but Denver gave me pause. I would do Portland (family there) but can't do the weather (too close to Seattle).

I moved to the Portland Oregon metro area 8 years ago from the SF Bay Area.

My wife and I love it here we have kids 3-13. It's more affordable than the Seattle area with much of the same benefits. That said I'm a cyclist and it does rain a lot compared to where I'm from. Seattle has more rainfall than Portland too I think.

Portland would certainly work as well, and there are things I like about Portland over Seattle and visa versa. Boise doesn't necessarily exite me.

How are the schools, and do you live in Portland itself or a suburb?

I've seen worse on i5 than about any highway out east.

The schools are great, I live across the river in Vancouver. Washington does not have state income tax and it works out well for me even though I work in Portland. I commute by bike but the traffic by car across the bridges sucks.

Portland has a lot of nice areas as well as the burbs. I see a lot of the city by bike and my wife and i spend a lot of time in Portland with the kids.

Ah, yes, the Oregon income tax/Washington sales tax play. IIRC the Jantzen Beach Costco is the busiest location in the world.

I don't think Jantzen Beach has a CostCo?

It seems the busiest CostCo world in the world is in Hawaii of all places.

There's one on Airport Way. Was conflating "across the river" with "Jantzen Beach." My bad. Could have gotten bad info on the activity level, or that was 15 years ago.

Until it snows. Then it's like bumper cars for Seattle drivers. Strangely drivers do better in the snow than on dry land in Spokane.

Houses are around $500-600K (~2200 sq ft) in any area with a decent school district, and can easily hit $800K-$1 Mil on the Eastside.

So be prepared for sticker shock.

Heard good things about it, but I've only driven through it a few times.

The Woodlands is ok, I'm young and single so, meh? But I can see how married folk would enjoy it.

The wife was talking about the possibility of moving to the Woodlands, she was out there last week on business. I have no love for Houston though, and neither one of us are very enthralled with the Texas in general. Rather just stay in Louisiana.

The wind helps make life more livable outside on in the Plano part of Dallas.
