Want to move to a different department within my company

I work for a fortune 200 company as an accountant. I have been working there for a year. I don't see myself getting promoted to senior accountant in my current department any time soon. There are a lot of senior accountant positions open around my company though and I want to apply for them.

Should I tell my boss this or should I just apply for them without him knowing? I'm not really sure how to go about this. I know its not a good idea to tell your boss you are looking for another job but it would probably get back to him anyway because he knows a lot of people in other accounting departments.

Since it's in the same company just explain to your boss you want to advance within the company and talk to him about it? If he knows alot of people in the other accounting depts, maybe he can help you land one of those positions you want?

Just start doing work in the other departments and slowly stop doing your current work. If you do it gradually enough, no one will be the wiser.

Better watch out.. maybe you can talk to someone that did transfer within the company

wifes company is backwards.. when they get a hint of someone wanting to transfer, they fire u.. the claim that you dont want to work there and make up tons of excuses, so they denied you the transfer and let you go..

totally backwards.. my company has freedom to transfer within..

Does your company's HR department have procedures for transferring or bidding into other jobs?

I'm not sure but most of the people in my current department have come from other departments so I know it is done here. Just not sure how to go about it.

Try asking one of your coworkers that trasferred into your department?

Ask HR?

i think it's more respectful to keep people in the loop, more ethical, etc.

however, corp. America often plays by a different set of rules.

if they were to be contemplating layoffs - i would want to find out more
about that before making a change.

but there's nothing wrong with talking to managers in other departments.
especially if they have bigger budgets & are more profitable & it would
be good for your career.

Ask your coworkers who have transfered
or
Apply for a position then tell your manager
or
Tell your manager and then apply for a position
or
Ask someone in HR

That is something awful; where I work telling your boss is a good strategy they usually help you out. But it's not written in stone, depend mostly on your boss, but is never bad enough to lay you off.
