Want to mod my XBox.

First off, I'll tell you my skills:

I don't know how to solder, nor do I know anything about soldering. I knew a good deal about computers prior to building my rig (check sig), but it was a great learning experience. I have heard so many great things about modded xboxes, so I think I am going to take the plunge. I have a good friend at work that is very good with the xbox mods, and he said he would charge $40. After reading up on some reviews, I heard the Xecuter 2.6 chip is good, but I saw a Xecuter 3.0. Anyone know what the difference is? Anyway, Ia lso thought I would drop in a bigger hard drive. I DON"T PLAY XBOX LIVE, so I'm not concerned with all of that. The main reason I want to do this, is because I want a digital media server in the house for videos and music, as well as playing backups since I have a very dumb techno-moron brother who can't realize that games have to be put in their cases, so I can never trade in games, nor pla my 50 bucks worth since he fusks them up. So:

1. Should I mod my xbox, considering my skills.
2. Is the Xecuter 2.6 a good chip, or is the 3.0 that much better (I'm not doing anything really advanced,)
3. Should I give it to my friend for 40 bucks-then I have someone to bitch at, since I am a n00b, but I can always learn🙂

hmm i should change my sig, since people think every topic i started has been locked and I am on a vacation!

Why not do solderless? I've done two so far without issue. As long has your Xbox is older than the 1.6 model Mobo you're good to go.

yeah xboxscene is where I'm basing all my info from. What is that much better about the X3 dedpuhl? I heard that there was a solderless mod chip a year ago, how is it installed then? Soylent, thank you for replying with a nasty comment-all your help was appreciated.

I got both mod chips both times from easybuy2000.com, my personal one was done a year or so ago and was the chameleon chip at the time, they now have a newer model and thats the one I installed for a friend of mine, it was easy for the most part and has a usb connector on the chip so you can just copy of the needed bios to it with little effort, but without a doubt, 1st determined the model Mobo your xbox has, then read up on xbox-scene.com forums to see whats the word these days as far as which chip is preferred. I see no reason why anyone risk screwing up their xbox to solder on a chip when they can do the solderless mod so easily.

its called the x-chip now, same thing i would imagine? how do i check which xbox I have (I purchased it about a year ago.)

Get yourself a 15 watts Soldering Iron and some solder from RS. Pratice soldering on a old motherboard and any circuit board until you're confortable with soldering. That's how I learned to solder last month. Now I have successfully modded 3 Xboxes. One suggestion, use the D0 point located on the back. It's 10x easier. Good luck.

Soylent's comment isn't nasty. It is the truth. Do you want to wreck your xbox? You have no experience soldering stuff and if you messit up you could easily do so.

Just pay someone to do it and it will be easier. Remember if you push in ram sticks the wrong way around that will screw your mobo up also...

Koing

i wouldn't have my xbox be my first soldiering project, i agree with koing and even soylent. there help is invaluable as they are telling you waht you probally should here

At the very least just practice before you do.

I understand what everyone means about soldering, since I have no experience whatsoever, but I am referring to the solderless kits. If I have o spend $15 more on a non-solderless kit, I guess thats worth not paying someone else to do it for $40. Popper, which mod chip did you choose, and whom-I think 40 bucks for install is bull.

just flash the TSOP if your xbox is older one and you dont care about live. Its very easy, you have to solder(or use conductive pen) to join two points which are very close.

My roommate just bought a solder modchip for his Xbox. He's so going to fry it because he doesn't know wtf he's doing and I'm going to laugh in his face when he does.

I would personally do a TSOP (unless you plan on playing live) Otherwise I would suggest a SOLDERED chip (not a solderless) and if you want I would do it for $20 +shipping (you would need to do all the hdd work, that is for solder job only)

I dont see how his comment was nasty... all he said was that you shouldnt try to solder on your xbox if you dont know how to.

Learn soldering on some radio shack toy kit, not your XBOX. Suck it up and pay someone to do it.

I bought a solderless modchip a while ago, but eventually gave up on installing it because the solderless modulee would always fall out of place. I was going to try soldering, but never got around to practicing.

Now I've been looking at my xbox and I've found the modchip, (it's an xecuter, don't recall which model) but all I have is the modchip. What else would I need in order to solder it in? If I recall, there was some sort of wire I had to put in the D0, am I able to get that wire from say...radio shack? or do I Need the one they had with it.

Any help is appreciated. If someone would be willing to walk me through some of the steps for modding my xbox I'd be willing to pay by paypal 🙂 (Aim me: Qosis55)
