Want to make it work or sell it

Hi. I have what I've been told is an unlocked P4 processor.

I'll email you a pic of it if you like - I've had people acuse me of trolling. This is for real. It says "Intel Confidetial" on it followed by an endless stream of numbers.

It is a 478 pin P4. I couldn't get it above 2 gigs, however. The fastest setting that worked was on a 533 FSB Asus board at x15. Above x15 I got an overclocking boot error on my P4T533-C motherboard.

I'm pretty sure this chip is at least a year old. I don't know anyone with an 800 fsb board. If this would run on one of those at 15x, I would love that because that's 3.0 gigs. If it is truly unlocked, then why won't it go over x15? Hopefully it's just me.

If someone has some suggestions on how to work this thing, let me know. I don't want to run my 133 up any faster because the memory starts to complain.

If someone wants to buy it, I'll entertain offers or a trade.

Thanks,

D

I came across it from a surplus guy I know. No more info available on it's origin.

I would rather not post a pic here. Give me a way to email it to you.

Sorry man, don't get all defensive about it. Just saying from a third party view that you, by defending your trollishness before anyone has attacked you on this forum, the fact that you have a new account, and the fact that you're suspicously hiding this photograph of an "unlocked P4" makes it a little suspicious for me. Honestly, most of us join this forum to learn more, seek information, and better others along with ourselves. You by hiding the picture and being all uptight about it doesn't really help anyone in this forum. It's like saying, "Thoroughbred B to 3.2ghz on Prometia for sale!" and then refusing to post any pics or evidence about it just gets people all excited and then mad.

DWill, there's a For Sale/For Trade forum on the boards. If you just want help, that's OK here. Have you checked the family, model, stepping and such with CPU-Z? That'd be something to start with.

Now we're getting somewhere!

I've never heard of that utility. Can I D/L it?

Neat little utility. I'm getting an education here guys, thanks!

Ok . . I put the chip in my son's machine - that has an Intel 850DMV (or something like that) board. There are NO jumper or CMOS options to set the processor. It came up as an 800 mhz processor (8x on 100 FSB) with no way of changing it.

Like I mentioned, in my computer (Asus p4t533-c) it made it to 2 gigs (x15 on 133 fsb).

Here are the CPU-Z numbers from the first two pages: (I can scan and send them to you if you like - I would post them here if I knew how).

I'll cut through some of the obvious ones - it's a Northwood with 0.13 technology. Brand ID 10. Voltage was grayed out. Under Specification it just says in paranthesis "(ES)" - Family is F, Model 2, stepping 1, ext. family 0, ext model 0, Revison says nothing, it is grayed out. Instructions : MMX, SSE, SSE2

Nothing unusual in Cache when compared to this computer (Northwood 2.4). Under Clocks the multiplier section said this: "x8.0 (-15-0)"

So guys . . . .just what is it I have here? I can't get it to go any faster on that stupid Intel board and can't find anyone with an 800 board.

My main question is this: How likely is this to work on a P4P800 running the 200 fsb?

Thanks and again, through email, I'll send you all the fresh pics you want.

Uh oh. I think I lost my fan club here!

Can someone help me decipher those numbers? I'm sorry I'm new to all this OC stuff but hey . . . so were you at one time!

Thanks,

D

If it comes up with an "ES" that means it's an engineering sample which should be multiplier unlocked.

That makes sense to me too. I just got back from a www.groups.google search using the words "unlocked p4 processor" and found 2 others with the same chip (apparently). One of them refered to it as "semi - unlocked." There seemed to be agreement that the bios could be the limiting factor in the multiplier part.

I can't tell for sure by what I read but I'm starting to think this thing can make it to 3 gigs or higher. I don't need to upgrade, really, so I just don't want to head down that thousand dollar path and then find out this thing won't run at 200 mhz fsb. I'll have to buy a processor then because according to a review on 800 boards, for the DDR400 to work, the processor must be at 200 mhz.

Take a look at that google info in the newsgroups. It is the 17 thread article and it is about a year old.

If the chip is a year old, then the likelihood that it is an 800mhz capable part is probably not very good. That the individual who sold it to you actually let it go, doesn't bode well for its possible overclock capability. I don't think I would waste too much money on it.

For $170 you can get a 2.4C 800mhz processor that alot of people have been getting well over 3ghz with. That is the direct I would go.

I didn't come across it that way but thanks for the opinion.

What about the numbers I posted above from CPUZ? What does stepping 1 mean? What about brand 10? My 2.4/533 reads as a brand 9.

Is there any information from CPUZ that helps in finding out just what this chip is capable of?

I'm not an overclocking enthusiest (yet). I see this chip as saving me 400 bucks over a 3.0g chip for my future motherboard and system and that's all. I would be just as happy to trade it for a locked 2.8 or 3.0 400mhz fsb chip. I have no emotional attachment to the fact that it is unlocked or semi-unlocked.

Thanks for the help...

Wish I could help. I tried a Google search for the stepping but did not find anything. Sorry.
