We have see the proliferation of threads on the strong arm tactics of the Recording Industry of America.

I think this deserves it's own thread . . . there is a simple solution: STOP BUYING NEW CDS. Organize a boycott with your friends and pass this idea along to other newsgroups.

There is only ONE way to hurt these greedy (um) "people" - that is by going after their sales/profits. However, don't forget to support the artists you like by attending their concerts.

I posted this to see if any one else agrees. It is open for discussion. 🙂

I am not advocating anything illegal, nor a "Boston Tea Party". I am suggesting that we force the RIAA to consider what their customers want.

Somebody paid to produce it. Somebody works their butt off to promote and distribute it. All those somebodies deserve to get paid for their work. Most important, Somebody created it. Do you think they should flip burgers all day, then rush home and jam in their garage just to entertain you?

If you like the music, support your favorite artists, and BUY IT! 😎

i agree with it, but it isn't going to happen. the majority of album sales are for artists like Eminem, Nsuck, backdoor boys, brit spears, shikira...etc, and those buyers aren't ones that are going to take something like this seriously, and don't download the music anyway. hell i would say half of them don't even know what a P2P is, or newsgroups exist.

it's like starting an online petition. it just doesn't and won't work.
 
I havent bought a single CD since napster closed unless I liked the band and thought they deserved my money. That was only 3 cd's but I'm going to keep on this if thats how the RIAA wants to play. They dont not have a chance in hell of stopping file sharing and all its going to do is make the artists go bakrupt. Some of them dont need the stuff they have anyways, have you seen some of thier houses. Ive cought a few of the cribs episodes and all I cna say is damn.

Well, I for one am tired of being ripped off by the RIAA. $16-$17 for a new CD is a giant ripoff. You can support them if you like since you like them and work with them.

I am not advocating "ripping off" artists or even the RIAA. Just - for people who agree with my opinion - not supporting them (period)

And going to concerts provides the best and largest income for artists, anyway.

Heck, if CD sales drop even further, they might consider trimming some of the FAT out of their business and lower CD prices, 😉

By your reasoning also, the average price of a plane ticket should cost in the thousands range not 150-250$.

Sad, but true. Lately, they have blamed bad CD sales not on the economy, not on the fact that most of their music lately has been rather crappy, but rather, it's the P2P services. It's internet radio.

I do not work for or with the RIAA. I design pro audio hardware. I also used to be a professional musician and songwriter with my own dreams and aspirations of cutting some hits. If you don't know who the RIAA is, or even if you think you do, try reading their own statement about who they are before making your judgments.

Before you open your mouth wide enough to change feet, again, here's the RIAA's statement on the costs of producing a CD. You can believe it, or not, but you should at least know what they have to say.

Getting down to issues, if you walk into a music store and steal a CD or DVD, you can get popped and put in jail. Aside from the physical transfer of some polycarbonate, tell me how stealing the same material by downloading it off a website, or from file sharing, is any different.
 
Harvey I support artists. But the industry has been convicted of price fixing, not once but twice. They aren't after trying to sell music anymore, they want pay-per-view music and movies. They want licenses not sales. The RIAA is trying to shut down used CD sales. Frankly I think they are insane. Yes, artists, mixers, production, marketing and everyone else deserves to be paid with one caveat. I don't want them to tell me what I should like anymore. Clear channel controls radio, the record companies control production and artists don't see profits from sales. The system is fvcked up and needs and overhaul.

I want a system where there are mandatory licensing laws for record companies. I want that law to say that artists recieve 5% of gross revenues on any record sales (if the album sells more than a certain amount). I want this law to prohibit companys like clear channel from preventing reasonable independent artists from being heard on the radio.

You can stop being an ass anytime you wish. First, unlike commercial music, the nation, at large, has an interest in maintaining the public transportation infrastructure, even at a loss. There are simply too many other benefits from keeping it afloat. Second, by your reasoning, with or without government support, you seem to think that the pilots, cabin attendants, ticket vendors, tower controllers, and everyone else involved in providing air transport, should donate their time to getting you from point A to point B without being paid. That's pure bullsh8!

Rahvin -- If Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing, Arthur Anderson, Martha Stewart, etc. have shown us anything, it is that a presumably noble, valid enterprise can be abused for greed. That is a good reason to eliminate such abuses, but it is NO excuse for ripping off the underlying valid business entity. In the case of CD's, that happens to include the creative artists and others who would prefer to be fairly compensated for their work product.
 
Harvey, I didn't see anywhere in this thread where anyone advocated "ripping off" artists or the recording companies. Where did you get that idea? I do see where people are getting awfully fed up with the RIAA and their tactics, especially where they blame a 5% drop in sales for a luxury entertainment product entirely on piracy. Last I checked, every industry (except housing and finance 😉 ) was suffering in the current economic climate. That the RIAA and co. want to use this economic downturn as an excuse to steal from their customers their rights of Fair Use is entirely unacceptable to me.
For example: I and my long-time GF own approx. 2000 CD's, albums, and tapes combined (could be more, I've actually never counted). I enjoy the convenience of mp3's and have spent quite a bit of time converting this collection to mp3, which is my right to do so under Fair Use. The RIAA would take this right from me, despite the fact that I do not pirate. I enjoy a lot of older music and much of our collection was purchased used at small record stores. The ability to buy and sell used music is a right under Fair Use. The RIAA is currently trying to put an end to this, either by extracting outrageous royalties for such sales (on product that has already been sold and for which they have already been paid!) or having the practice banned altogether.
On top of that, there is very little good music being released right now. Unwillingly to take risks, the RIAA and co. only seem to want to produce endless streams of pop crap and drivel, formulaic garbage.
And then compound all that with the fact that customers simply like mp3's. I'm not advocating piracy, I'm just pointing out the incredibly obvious fact that RIAA and co. have, through their own foolishness and stubborness, missed the boat on what could have been one of the greatest new product releases of all time.
I have a real hard time feeling sorry for them...
 
I have been giving them a strong message ever since they initiated the Napster action. I have not purchased 1 CD since that time.
 
I dont really know anything about the RIAA, but I get my CD's from England, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Korea and Japan. Does this affect me at all, or is the RIAA just in the US? And what about American bands on german labels, etc?

Sheesh that's exactly what is NOT happening under the current system. At face value it's a simple legal issue but when you look into it you discover gross inequities, conspiracies and an oligopoly that has and continues to abuse its power.

We're talking about a group of people who, for a time, actually had legislation passed allowing them to assume all rights to an artists work after he/she died! These people are crazed, obsessed and will say and do anything to maintain their oligopoly.

I take it you follow this through for written works as well? No library card or using the copy machine when doing a research paper?
 
I WHOLE HEARTEDLY AGREE WITH THIS. BUT... DO YOU HONESTLY THINK WE CAN BOYCOTT CDS? I WISH I COULD STAND OUTSIDE OF TOWER RECORDS WITH A HUGE SIGN SAYING "PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT TERRORISM (RIAA), WHEN YOU BUY A CD YOU HELP SUPPORT A EVIL CAUSE!"
 
The best way to support an artist is go to their concerts. They don't make anything off a cd, but the money comes from concerts. At least that is what my musician buddy told me

Music has been around for ages, and is more important to me and my existence than flying will ever be. I have talked with artist who have released their own small batch cd's. As well as owners of local private studios. The RIAA charges too much and it's executives make too much money, and it limits it's artists too much. I dont care what you say, the RIAA execs do not work 15million times harder or smarter than I do. They have been in this struggle for more than a year now and I can;t remember them compromising or taking a single step toward a plausible solution.

I honestly havent bought a new cd for myself in more than 2 years...i did buy my wife one for xmas though..
