I'm finishing off my last week of high school this week, and I don't really have any plans for the summer. I was thinking of maybe taking a summer course or reading some books and getting a certification for my resume, either A+ or CCNA. Does anyone have any pointers as to where I should look to get started, where to register for the test, etc?
I live in Ottawa, Ontario. I don't know if these can be done online, or if I need to go to a test centre, etc
any help would be appreciated!

I'm gunna do the same thing, it's like 2k for the course though, it seems like it's 3course for the a+ certification, would be nice to get a job easier though.

Check if your school has any discounts. It helps a lot as the normal voucher cost is over $100. I got both of mine for $60. You will need to go to a test center. The test itself isn't hard. I'd suggest a study guide like BeachFront Quizzer. If you have special needs you can get more time and have the test be verbal. Don't call the people up at Prometric as the operators are clueless and have conflicting stories. Register online. Much simpler.

Alot of times using the quizzers will help you pass. Its like cheating, they go out and get all the questions and answers then present it to you as a study tool. You simply memorize the questions and answers. When you get to the real test, most of the questions you encounter will be directly from the quizzers and the few that you don't see you would have seen in the books you've read (assuming you read a study guide or something).

You can register for the test online.

Don't waste your time on those certifications. The industry went down hill and those certifications mean nothing. Go to college and get a degree.

I just took the A+ exam and the practice tests and quizzes help you a lot!

A few of the questions came directly from the practice quizes.

dunno about the others but pick up the Cisco Press books for CCNA or any cisco certs. buy a copy of boson for practice before the tests.

understanding networking is the key, memorizing is a waste of your time. if you can afford it, grab one/two routers off fleabay. good luck.

Indeed. A+ techs make minimum wage here in SoCal. My advice is to cram you're college courses and get a Masters or PHD.

get a undergrad degree. a masters in compsci is only 1 year more than a undergrad if you work hard. im not sure its worth it.

but certs are worthless. if any high school kid can get one, its worthless. the idea is to be special. thats what makes you valuable.
