Want to get a new shooter with modern day weapons. Thinking Just Cause 3 or Far Cry 4.

Which is better? Or do you have another suggestion?

I can get FC4 for about $10 cheaper than JC3.

I liked JC2 and played it a lot but never finished it. got kind of bored running around blowing the same stuff up. Course I probably didn't pay much attention to the story missions.

I liked FC3 as well and finished, but did get boring for same reasons as JC2, doing the same things over and over again.

I realize both JC3 and FC4 are more of the same.

Was also thinking maybe GTA 5 but I haven't been impressed with the later GTA games.
Watchdogs was also an interesting looking game I never bought. Heard too many bad things about it, but maybe they have patched it since then?

i kind of want something with MP to it as well.

Not what you asked for, but HumbleBundle has "Call of Juarez Gunslinger" for $1.
It's a super fun single player shooter... and I paid more than $1 for it a year back.

Does it need to be an open world single player shooter? I'm a big fan of Rainbow 6: Siege as it's heavy into tactical squad based combat. It's none of that run & gun silliness that permeates CoD nowadays that I'm not such a big fan of. Most of the content is in multiplayer although there is some single player content.

no it doesn't have to be open world or only single player. although I would like there to be a single player mode if possible

I have Siege and its not fun unless you got a team that works together and that rarely happens in pub games. Plus they really nerfed the single player portion in the last patch. The single player gets old very quickly because theres really only 2 game modes you can play by yourself. they others are too hard solo. All the maps are the same for every game mode too.

Between FC4 and JC3 specifically I'd go with FC4. But JC3 wouldn't be a bad choice at all, it's fun, but I feel that the replay value is better with FC4. I don't own either btw, but I played them both for a few hours each at my cousin's place, and I prefer FC4. However, FC4 is way too similar to FC3 (at least, FC3 was a significant improvement over FC2, not so much with FC4, but that's just me I suppose). To be honest, for me, the best Far Cry game so far is FC3: Blood Dragon.

For other suggestions, I'd say BioShock Infinite for a good single-player experience. If you feel like playing something more akin to old-school shooting you could go with Hard Reset or Shadow Warrior. There's also Painkiller for mindless action (Gold Edition on Steam, don't touch any other Painkiller game, they're so bad compared to the first), or heck even Serious Sam HD (1 and 2) or SS3. There's also Red Faction (the first one) or why not the surprisingly good Red Faction: Guerrilla (I didn't really liked Armageddon). Also Transformers: War for Cybertron, wasn't bad at all (I haven't any other Transformer games past that one so I can't tell if the more recent ones are good).

And finally I'd say RAGE. I never finished it myself, I admit I got bored of it but you might like it, who knows. And speaking of id Software, give a go to Brutal DOOM if you already own any of the DOOM games (if not they're not that expensive and still worth the price to this day, in my opinion; especially considering the mods).

FC4 is a significant improvement over FC3, IMO. More fleshed-out story and characters (who are actually interesting, and not just a bunch of whiny kids).

The mechanics are better, the little chopper is awesome, there is more environmental variety, you get to ride elephants and knock vehicles off the road..etc.. ;) I think they listened to a lot of the complaints about FC3 and made definite improvements.

Co-op is also great if you have a friend that owns it. Working together to do a complete stealth takedown of a fortress is one of the most rewarding FPS experiences I've had in quite some time.

JC2 was fun for awhile, but it is the epitome of the kind of game where you just do the same thing over and over ad nauseum. It's just a big play-pen. Never finished it, but still glad I played it.

A lot of what i read says fc4 is basically fc3 with some changes. Watching videos of it does seem like it really is the same.

I've been playing JC3, and while good I would wait for lower prices. FC4 was worth full price to me, I enjoyed to the end. Both games are going to have a risk of getting repetitive after a while (a common issue with open world games in general) but I think FC4 was a better game. I don't see myself finishing JC3 like I did FC4.

I'm still having fun with JC3, but it just doesn't seem as polished. I've had some issues with the controls from time to time, and the shooting mechanics aren't great. Wait a little while longer on that and the price should be better.

Well that's because FC3 was a great game already, they didn't need to change much. They added a few things that maybe were missing from FC3. Big complaint of FC3 was after you cleared a settlement things got boring, because there were never anymore enemies there. So in FC4 they give you the ability to "re-clear" that settlement if you want to try it a different way. There's a marker in each camp you clear to let you re-try if you want. And sometimes the enemy will attack the camp you're near to give you more to do.

I loved both of those games, but the grappling hook and wingsuit in JC3 are a lot of fun to play with. JC3 has more modern vehicles (tanks, jet fighters, apc's) than FC4, but the wilderness of FC4 is amazingly immersive.

I think if you like the open world sandoxy stuff, you really would be happy with either of them. They each bring their own unique features. Hell, just get both of them!

RAGE is not a bad shooter either, especially if you play it on the hardest level...

I'm looking at CDkeys.com I have seen several people on here use them with good reviews.

FC4 is $18.95
JC3 $29.02

If i bought from there, I could actually buy both and be at the same price as just 1 of these games somewhere else!

I forced myself to finish Far Cry 4 and I enjoyed it. I only did the story missions. I didn't waste my time doing the other side stuff. I can't bring myself to spend the time doing those. I will probably never play FC4 again. Once its done its done and it has no multiplayer worth mentioning, but the game is a good one.
Far Cry 2 was better than either FC3 or 4 because of the super fun multiplayer Far Cry 2 had. It really was a ton of fun.

Or just buy one, and by the time you're done with it the other will be cheaper

I wouldn't buy from cdkeys.com. They are grey market, and if it came down to it, I don't trust Steam to not disable the keys if they decided it was impacting them negatively.

FC4 all the way. It's a great game and should not go unplayed by any fan of FPS genre games.
