Want to get a gaming console primarily for racing

I'd have to agree with most here in recommending a Xbox 360. I have the 360 with the MS Wireless Racing Wheel, as well as Forza 2. It looks awesome (on my 50" HDTV), and is a blast to play. Its got a huge assortment of cars you can race and customize, and some of the graphical designs people come up with for their cars are just mind-boggling.

I also believe there will be a new Project Gotham Racing game coming out soon (if it already isn't out).

Xbox 360 + Forza Motorsports 2 = addiction

I bought a 360 just for this game, it's great. Check out my gallery with shots from the game: Forza 2 Gallery

(Ignore a couple of the screens, they got messed up when I resized them.

You can get a used xbox pretty cheap. I'd start with that and wait on the 360 till later this year when the more durable versions are released later this year. One thing to check for your xbox game purchases would be that the game is 360 upgradeable.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm sold on a 360. I have no desire to buy old tech, but it didn't click in my head just yet that LCD + lower resolution = shat. There are a few decently cheap Xbox bundles on my local Craig's List, so I may do that if the price is right or wait for the new revisions that run cooler and definitely wait until after the price drop for sure. I keep an eye on the gadget/tech blogs/sites and the price drops are all but certain.

Thanks again all

No, just trying to offset the cutting edge technology syndrome that is on these boards. I know the 360 will be the best, just trying to figure if it's worth the mega price difference.

you have a 1080p screen, whos got "cutting edge technology syndrome" ??

I got the 1080p LCD because I don't buy TV's often, I wanted something that would keep me happy for quite a while. The previous TV's in this house were <30" crappy RCA tube TV's if that tells you anything, all passed down.

EDIT And it was a Vizio 47" at Sam's, not exactly cutting edge for large 1080p TV's.

save up for the 360. The IQ is worth the difference especially since you are in this for the long haul, you might as well just get something that can be optimized for your TV.

Definitely get the 360, plus it has about the best Racing Wheel for any platform. Also the 360 should play most of the Xbox racers too, just check the back compat. list.

I'll say stay old school and get a modded Xbox. 480p still looks good IMO.

I played Forza, Burnout 3, MotoGP 3, and NFSU 2 and graphics still look good on my old Infocus X1 projector and 42" plasma. It will probably look worse for you since you have a LCD and 1080P at that. But if regular DVD movies look good to you on that TV, I think you'll still be happy with Xbox 480p graphics.

Or you can get a PS2 and GT4. GT4 at 1080i shouldn't be bad. I'm still playing GT3 and have yet to upgrade to GT4.

360 + Burnout Take down(Xbox version) + Burnout Revenge (360 version) + Forza 2 + PGR3. Then in november get Burnout Pradise which is god of all racing game 😉

So I know 360 is the shiz, but what about the regular Xbox? How's the IQ? Will it look decent on a 47" 1080p?

Not so much. I have a 42" 720p LCD HDTV and the regular Xbox looks like crap compared to my 360.

I'll name a few of the popular titles:

For PS2 you have the whole Gran Turismo lineup, a few Need for Speed titles, Test Drive Unlimited

Xbox has Forza Motorsports, Project Gotham Racing

Xbox360 has Forza Motorsports 2, Project Gotham Racing 2 and Test Drive Unlimited (way better than ps2 version)

Not much of a console game but I'm sure other people can add more to this list
Thanks this is helpful. I hear FOrza and Gotham rock

They do...and so does DiRT if you're into Rallying. I actually like it better than the other two.

Max it can output is 480p bro. Its gonna look nasty
I'm fine with 720p DVD's on a cheap Phillips DVD/Divx player with Progressive Scan on. Will Xbox look that much worse?

Yes. It is not just the resolution, but the texture quality and other graphical enhancements between the original and 360 hardware. Believe me...it's worth the extra money if you have an HD set to get the 360...no comparison.

Giddyup...I should have made it father in the thread before posting...you won't regret the decision.

Yep 360 for sure. DIRT is awesome for PC but requires such a good system that I'd want it for 360. Forza on Xbox 1 was the best racing game on Xbox, so Forza 2 on 360 can only be that much better.

The price difference is huge, but racing games in HD on a big TV would be awesome, and if you plan to keep this for another couple of years, you'll be disappointed with the lower resolution graphics and the lack of new releases on the Xbox. I like the Xbox the most of last gen, and it has a lot of good games, but nothing new is coming out.

I'd start off with a 360 premium (or core with HD), racing wheel, Forza 2, and DiRT. That'll set you back a lot I know, but look for used deals on the wheel and games maybe and wait a bit for a price drop or just get a used 360 if the warranty can be transferred (doubt it though). Pick up used Xbox 1 games cheap after checking the backwards compatibility list. PGR2 on the Xbox 1 was good but you can probably find PGR3 for the 360 for $20 or less. Also keep an eye out for a cheap used copy of Test Drive Unlimited, mostly if you are gonna have Live. And there are those crappy Burnout games if you're into that. Finally, there are NFS games for Xbox and 360, so look into used copies of those.

I'm jealous... I wish I had a big HDTV, 360, wheel, and 4-5 of the best Xbox and Xbox 360 racing games!!!

PS2... not a chance. That thing sucks. And the controller is crap for racing compared to analog triggers on the Xbox controllers.
