I don't want to pay a company to do it. A friend of mine says that just to change the first name, all I need to do is go to the SSA office and get a form. I can't find the form online.

Anyone got any info/tips/experience on this?

Reason I want to change my first name is because I share the first name with my dad...it has finally gotten old.

I think you use the same form you register to vote with online.....that may be MA only though.....

Hm... I believe you need to put a notice in the paper or something, but I dunno for sure.
Tried googling it, or searching your state government's website?

I have the same first name as my dad AND grandpa... :) Yes, I know it gets old... but that is your heritage.

so, what are you going to change your name to?

i did a name change back when i was 18 and entering college. my given name was my korean name. it's now, legally, my middle name. it was just annoying to hear people butcher your name and have to re-pronounce it a thousand times.

i don't remember the paper work portion, but i remember having to stand in front of a judge and swear i wasn't changing my name to run from the law :p

GOOGLE says.....

thanks for the links :)

I've been thinking about changing my last time, if I ever quit my job. if pronounced incorrectly, my last name rhymes with vagina :-/ the jokes have gotten old.

Cost me 75 bucks to add another middle name over a decade ago.

Local courthouse + social security card + picture id + money

vezina

acceptable pronunciations are "vez-na" or "vez-ee-na," but an annoying amount of people pronounce it as "vez-eye-na".

I'm thinking of changing it to either Smith or using my mom's maiden name, la Croix (sure, no one will pronounce it correctly, but I'd rather deal with French jokes than vagina jokes :p).

Is it a matter of... you don't like your dad... or you just don't want to have to figure out who people are talking to/asking for or sending mail to...

You could always save yourself the effort and go by your middle name.
