want to buy a Steam account

I have had a Steam account for a good while now and my brother-in-law loves to play CS:S. So I was thinking of buying a Steam account for him so we can play head to head and not share a computer. Long story short I would like to purchase the Silver account, but 60 bucks is still pretty high, but I have found them for sale on eBay for around 40. Is it against any rules to do that?

Thanks

kd

Even if it is against something in their EULA (very well might be something against selling the account), if you got the Steam login & password, then I don't see how they would even know the account has been sold to someone else. However, unless I'm missing something, couldn't the seller potentionally use the Lost Password function and have the current password sent to his/her email in which case it would still be his/her account sort of.

I can't remember where, but when I was first getting set up with Steam a few months back, I read something stating that if you bought or sold a Steam account you would be banned from the Steam network. I don't know how they could really tell if you bought or sold one, but I do remember reading that. Valve is very much against it, in other words....

I would never purchase an account like that online, no way of trusting the person doesn't keep using it or steal it back. But then, maybe that's just me.

It is against the EULA. If it is actually possible for the to find out what happend, I have no idea.

Well I ponied up and paid the other 20 and got it for him from STEAM. I would have liked to have saved the 20 bucks but, I would have hated to have his account banned.

Thanks

kd

Yup, the only way to get a Steam account off Ebay would be to buy an Unused Disk set. Once the code is used it is non-transferrable. However, if you have a Steam account, but no Disks, you could buy a Used set of Disks off Ebay and use that to Install HL2, you just need to use the Key you bought and not the Key for the disks you bought.

Isn't there some kind of law that says all software licenses sold can be resold, or something like that? I don't know, remember it vaguely from years ago.

Not that I know of. Alias Wavefront has the same kind of policy concerning Maya. You can only sell your license if you have permission to do so from Alias Wavefront.

It is perfectly legal to buy a steam account off ebay. However Valve doesn't like it because it takes away a potential sale. Hence why they lock you into a Steam account in the first place. If by some miracle Valve does figure out the account name of the person who is selling they could very well ban the account. However, there's really no way for them to find out without buying it themselves.

There is no trusting of ANYTHING bought online and especially through ebay. And you can make sure they don't steal it back by changing the password.

Steam monitors IP ranges of account holders. I remember seeing posts on their forums of accounts being banned because of this.

Exactly! It would be ridiculous if you got banned for taking your game to your aunt's house (or whatever) to play for the weekend!

They probably monitor this activity when you change the email steam is registered and the password to the account... sure fire signs that the account has been given to someone else.

I believe you are referring to people who had their account banned because their CD Key (not IP) was "out of range" meaning that it was generated by a keygen.

You are perfectly entitled to run your steam account from any IP, any location.

if u buy one on ebay can't u just change the lost password question and the email address on file and change the passwrod? then the seller can't acsess it or get ur password

I believe that would be possible.
I just checked my steam account. Though you can't change the steam account name, you CAN change the password and contact email address (the address steam will use to send you a new password).
