Want cheap but decent whole bean coffee that's not bright.

My current bag of Target Sumatra Dark Roast is coming to an end and it was pretty good. I've heard that Costco Kirkland Signature House Blend at $11/2lb is pretty good as well, but it's roasted by Starbucks and I'm not sure if it's bright or not. Any others from places like Walmart, Safeway, etc?

I use a manual coffee grinder and brew it in my Jetboil french press. I'm done dealing with shitty drip machines and crappy blade grinders that make a bad grind with a lot of dust that turns into slush.

Costco roasts & bags their coffee right there at the counter where they sell it inside their own store. At least my local costco does, I assume all the branches are pretty much the same.

When you say you want a "local" source you'd need to say where you are.

Your profile says California, that's 163,696 sq mi with about 40 million legal residents plus untold millions of illegal mexicans, so your request is way too vague to offer you any help. You could be anywhere from Alturas to San Ysidro, a vast area, so "local" has no meaning, makes no sense. Thus ends the rant.

Costco Mountain Blend is good to my taste, you might try that.

Best: If you're around paradise (Santa Barbara) then Santa Barbara Roasting Company.
2nd place: If you're around San Luis Obispo then SLO Roasted coffee.
3rd place: If you're around Silicon Valley then Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company.

Of course there's always Peet's.

By local I meant just going to the nearby Target or Costco. I don't expect actual local coffee companies to be price competitive. And I live in Fremont, CA (near San Jose).

Maybe you're thinking of a different store, because all the Costcos I know of would definitely not be roasting and bagging their own coffee in their warehouses. Their business is selling stuff they get from their supplies in bulk packs, not manufacturing on-premises. Or it could be you happen to go to the one Costco warehouse-factory where they make all their Kirkland brand coffee or something?

The Costco near me roasts their coffee in store.

To the OP, I just picked up a bag of Peet's Coffee House Blend and it is excellent.

Bright coffee is coffee with a characteristic tangy or even sour taste to it. It is found in high altitude coffees like those from Colombia. Some people enjoy the brightness. I don't.

This may be a stupid question OP, but you are making the coffee with very hot water, right? I believe 192F is supposed to be the magic spot, I could be wrong though.

Yeah, I'm using my roommate's hot water dispenser thing. It keeps the water at just below boiling I think. Or something.

200 degrees according to Chemex. Bring the water to a boil, remove it from the heat, when it stops boiling, it's ready.

FBB: I second the Eight O'Clock recommendation (except I don't like French Roast, I drink the Columbian or Original flavor). It's available in most grocery store chains, it's relatively cheap, and it's very smooth, IMO.

It's won several blind taste tests against all of the heavy hitters.

Also, for grinders, check out the Kitchen Aid KCG-200. It's a burr grinder and works well from "extremely fine" to "Massive Chunks o' coffee" settings. It looks like a skinny blender.

For those times when liquid caffination is unavailable or inconvenient, try Penguin Mints; three mints equal a cup of coffee/can of pop/soda/Coke. They also have other flavors and un-caffinated. Stay away from the gum.

Sam's Club has some decent (according to a friend) coffee that's 2 1/2 lbs. for $16, or something like that. I'm going to pick some up in the next couple days to have as my daily work coffee (basically a cheap replacement for the brown water they call coffee here), so I'll let you know how it is.

I just buy the bags of whole beans at costco.

I tried the kirklands brand, and didn't like it much. Im not sure what the brand is called that I have now
