Want another miniDV camcorder

My first DV camcorder was a Samsung SCD103 which I bought going on 2 years ago. It's been a good one but I am starting to get annoyed with being able to hear the camcorder operate while watching movies as well as the quality of them don't look that good at all. What would be a good upgrade from this?

The AVCHD is nice, but me, I dislike not having media. You have to save them somewhere and are either saving them on HDD elsewhere or putting them on disc. Now you have to either choke on $1k for a Blu-Ray burner, wait for HD-DVD (saw discs at Fry's), or downres to DVD.

OP, Under $500 - Panasonic GS300, $750 Pannie GS500, $1k+ Sony HC3, Canon HV10. The GS500 allows external mic.
