Wow, there sure are a lot of people willing to spend $100 to $200 for a K6-III+ 500!

I could possibly see spending $100 under the right conditions, but more than that???

For $70 shipped, you can get a Duron 600 that easily runs +850mhz using a $135 board, and the included heatsink and fan. You also get ATA/66+, as well as the latest chipset technology. Even a cheap board that requires a CPU mod to overclock is only $85. Even if you didn't overclock the 600, you could get a new cheap motherboard and a Duron 600 that will blow away even a K6-III+ 600, for $155.00.

I have 2 great socket 7 boards, Shuttle Hot569 and FIC 503A, and even using the 503A which supports 112mhz FSB and ATA/66, I wouldn't think of spending $100 for a K6-III+ when the new Duron's are so cheap and FAST!!! And Stable, which is something the FIC was never good at.

Upgrading your laptop to a Duron might be a tad expensive, for $100.00 you can double the real performance of this laptop, a pretty good deal to me.

The mobile K3+ 500's might be available. I have a board that supports them all, Epox G5. Its in my daughter's pc. But man spending around $100 for any of those chips is steep. Considering an Athlon 500, P3 450-500, and Durons can all be had for $100 or less. And you can get a decent board for another $50-75.

I currently have a k6-iii clocked at 266 (400 is too hot for the summer :( ) in my server. And if I can get a k6-iii+ that can run reliably at 400 I'm happy.
So what if I'm paying $100 more ... all I have to do is swap the CPU. If I get a new mobo and cpu I'll have to do a reinstall of nt4, plus reinstall and reconfig every software. Plus who knows how long of a down time. With the time spent doing chores like that I can do actual work and make more than that $100 back.

(Just to shed some light on ppl wondering why someone would want the cpu instead of, say, the duron.)

I don't think there's even a K6 III + model. There are K6s, K6-2s, K6-IIIs and K6-2+s, no K6-III+s.

Hey beat,

Does your powersupply have an intake fan on the bottom of it?
Those type of powersupplies greatly reduce the heat buildup in a case. Some other tricks are PCI slot exhaust fans and drive-bay intake fans.

MadRat: no, my PS dated back to the Pentium era. Think I'll take your suggestion and find a replacement. Any suggestion for an AT 350W PS?

I want to hear how well these overclock. If they can hit 600 consistantly, maybe I'll ditch my K6-3 400@500 for one :)

It may be easier to customize the p/s by yourself.

I just draw a circle the size I need. Next I take
a flathead screwdriver's head and whack it through
the hole with a hammer. Then I use snips to make
a clean circular cut. The fan is attached with
JB Weld, the wonder-gunk that people use to fix
their cars! It also forms a nice hard shell over
any jaggies around the hole.

I use case fans with a regular 5/12v attachment.

Hmm .. apparently it isn't so easy - all the ICs and what not are at the very bottom. And if I flip the PS around it won't fit back into the case.

Oh well, winter's coming anyway.

Strange, all of my p/s's have the electronics up high or in the upper middle. Perhaps you could simply spend $29 on a 300W powersupply with it built in?

Just what I was thinking.
But it is pretty hard to find a good one that can last this long, and quiet, you know? These things you just sort of have to bump into, it doesn't appear if you look for them.

i am currently running on one of the non existent k6-3+ cpu's. I just got a k6-3+ 450 which i have overclocked to 550 and i have not even increased the voltage. Perhaps the cost analysis depends on where you are - here in australia a k6-3+ cpu goes for 171.5$. 650 duron about the same plus 20$ for cheap duron heatsink. Motherboard for duron is 200 for cheapest - gigabyte amd750 board - 230 for a bit better (ficaz11) and 300 for best (abit, asus). so 171.5 vs 430 to 500. it seems to be a bit cheaper for the k6-3+. in fact is 70-120$ chaper if you even have to get a motherboard that supports it and 230 to 330$ cheaper if you already have a motherboard. Ideed their are people in the world who do not play fps and don't live on their fpu performance. plus the performance is better than you might think. Tomshardware showed that a k6-2+ 600 was as good as a celeron 500 for gaming and better for on-gaming. But aceshardware showed a k6-3 500 as equal to a k6-2+ 600. At 800*600 and 32bit my testing shows that my video card (16 mb tnt2) is prob limiting my perf a bit. Of cource a could stick a gts in it and run it at 1024*768 with AA and get the same perf (or similiar) as someone with a thunderbird 1ghz. of cource it is very easy to simlpy just remove the cpu and pop a new one in. Saves all the problems you often run into when installing new motherboard.
