Read the preview here.

The Map was de_dust, and in game res was set to the LCD?s native resolution, 1920x1200. The 9800XT seemed to have absolutely no issue with running this resolution, even in the most frag filled sections of the map. Graphic quality can be summed up in one word: Amazing. The level of detail is just amazing. The textures on the ground and walls were mind blowing. Individual pieces gravel are visible on the ground, and the mortar between the bricks looks just like mortar, grainy texture, uneven surface and all. All equipment the player purchases at the beginning of the round is visible on the player model as he moves about.

9800XT could play it fast at 1900x1200?:Q I have a good feeling that many people (Nvidia and ATI) will be playing HL2 with great performance. Color me impressed by the sound of this engine!

Is anyone else not impressed by those screens? I guess had he used fraps to capture them they would have looked nicer, but they look rather bland.

Agreed, the screens were not great. I just like the info mainly.
What am I missing? All I see is 2 crappy scaled down jpgs, taken with a camera, of the guy playing, not even a screen capture. Not to mentioned the monitor sucked for gaming. I'll take the following description as my guide to IQ detail in this game

At one of the bombsites, one indoors, with sun slits in the dome above, the individual dust motes are visible floating through the air. Gone are the jagged lines that previously represented curves, to be replaced be natural looking arcs. Even looking at the player models hands were a study in shapes and proportions. They just looked real. Everywhere you looked, visual improvements had been made.
Works for me :)

Precisely what I was going to ask.

You are missing nothing. I was going to edit my post since it made no sense because there are only two crappy digital pics but I never edited it.

That would be nice, but Im guessing it will be more demanding then that with max settings.

It sounds like they mainly updated the textures and models, but they probably didn't toss in the hundreds of shader programs that will find their way into HL2, so performance may not be entirely comparable (fluid at 19x12 sounds too good to be true for full HL2 eye candy). Still, I'm excited. Sucks that only CS:CZ owners will be able to play the CS:S beta, though.

Good to see that the voucher is finally going to amount to more than just butt wipe :p

particle system with alpha-channel support?

Sounds like HL2 is going to *really* take advantage of ATI's "TruForm" features. That should definately be interesting, because it saves on the amount of geometry that the host CPU has to push; instead the GPU does dynamic LOD mesh tesselation for greater geometry detail.

I look forward to seeing this in actual gameplay, I've yet to actually see TruForm in action.

Well, they're either particles or alpha textures, not both .. I think.

I also don't think that's TruForm (the 8500 was the only ATi card with dedicated TF hardware), just a higher polygon count.

I think. Looking forward to more screenshots, though.
