hi,
I just bougt a new pc and I wanne overclock as much as posible but whitout spending money to it and I wanne keep my system stabile...

case: AOpen QF50C Black P4/AMD,Mid.T, 24p 300W, Air-guide 1.1, PSC
processor: [Skt 939] AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 3000+ 64bit Skt 939, Retail
hard disk: WD 80 GB ATA100 7200rpm WD800JB 8MB Cache
motherboard: [Skt 939] ASUS A8VDel GLan K8T800Pro,SATA,Raid,1394

graphic card: [AGP] Asus Nvidia N6600TD, 256MB Tv-out, DVI,2nd VGA

i hope you can make something good from it and tell me what to do.... just keep in mind that i don't know much about overclocking so use easy therms :p

ps: where can I learn alot of overclocking and stuff like that

best regard

Welcome to the forums... I agree that PSU is very marginal, other than that you should be able to easily OC to 2.2 ghz (3500+ performance) Try it ! leave the voltage stock, use a divider and push the fsb up 10 mhz at a time...

first, look between the pci slots on your board. there will be letters printed there that say A8V deluxe and then really small it will say 2.00 or 1.(something) you better have one that says 2.00 otherwise it will be really hard to oc. i would search google for some info on basic bios settings, then read the "quick and dirty a64 oc'ing guide" thread, at the top of this section. make sure you set the agp/pci frequency to 66.66/33.33 in the bios.

i've looked in the pc and yes i got a 2.00 version
so the only thing i do is put the front side bus 10 mhz up every time
and when will i see when i've put tu much on it...
and don't change anything else in the BIOS....
and what is a divider?
and do I need windows XP64 for bether preformance or can I stick whit my normal XP
i've just looked at the Quick and dirty A64 clocking guide and somthimes i don't understand it at all....:( if anyone whisches to help me in privat PM me for my msn so we can chat about it

thx already guy's i'm hoping to learn alot here

You might want to look into overclocking a bit more before you overclock.

To answer your questions:
1-3: read the quick and dirty A64 overclocking guide at the top of this forum
4: A divider is what makes the RAM run at a certain fraction of the FSB. ie a 200mhz FSB with a 1:2 divider (also called DDR 200) would make the memory run at 100mhz.
5: You shoudl probably stick with normal windows xp for now until 64-bit drivers mature.

no, you dont need windows 64 bit. things you must do - make sure the hypertransport is not above 1000mhz. thats the ht multiplier times the fsb. the ht multi is under cpu config. there will be settings for 100, 800, 600, 400. that really means 5x, 4x, 3x, 2x. so, before you start set it at 4x, and when you get to 250 fsb, set it at 3x next, set your memory to ddr266, you wont need to go lower than that, that is in cpu config>memory settings, and set clock mode to limit. then, set your cpu multi to 6. then, set agp/pci freq. to 66/33. then, you have to know whether you have a 90nm chip or a 130nm. you can see this in cpu-z. if you have a 90nm (most likely) dont hesitate to put the cpu voltage up to 1.55v. if you have a 130nm set it to 1.65v. then start increasing by ten.

if your system doesnt boot after you save bios settings, turn off the computer, and turn it back on. you will get an overclocking failed message. go into the bios, and reduce it a bit, restart, then try the settings one more time, if it doesnt work again, thats the limit. sometimes it fails for some reason, but if you try again it works. you just dont want it to fail twice in a row. otherwise you will have to use the clear cmos jumper, which is annoying.

please tell me if there is something you dont understand.

hmm,

i was in the BIOS and the hypertransport was just on 1000mhz
then i've put the ht mutiply on 4x but i couldn't find where to see the fsb to put it on 3x...
the memory was put on DDR 266 clock mode limiet but i couldn't find the CPU mitiply to put it on 6 and eather couldn't i find where to put the CPU voltage on 1,55

also can't find where to put agp/pci to 66.66/33.33

thx for realy helping me out guy's

The basics

CPU mhz = HTT x CPU multi --------------- (1800mhz = 200 x 9)stock
FSB= LDT x HTT----------------------------- (1000mhz = 5 x 200)stock
Ram Speed = HTT x (memory clock/200)- (200mhz=200 x (200/200)) stock

Objective: get the highest CPU mhz while keeping FSB <= 1000 and keeping Ram speed around 200mhz (DDR400)

Here are settings that would give you a 10% overclock. This should be pretty easy on stock voltages.

HTT=220
CPU multi=9
LDT=4
memclock =166
AGP/PCI 66mhz/33mhz

this would give you

CPU mhz--------1980mhz (220 x 9)
FSB--------------880mhz (220 x 4)
Ram speed -----182.6mhz (220 x (200/166)

From here you can increase the HTT gradually, testing stability as you go up using programs like Prime95 or SuperPI (free downloads). When you start getting errors in Prime or SuperPI increase the vcore(CPU voltage) and test again. If you are stable with the higher vcore, then you can raise the HTT more. etc....

Overclocking is a process of trial and error and testing. Take your time and have fun. And like others said. Read, Read, and Read some more!!!!!!!

thx,

but where do I see the fsb in what option?
and can't find the option to put the CPU voltage to 1.55 and the option for AGP/PCI

btw: i found something in my BIOS and it says overclocking and then I can choos a % how much i want to do it schould I put that on to? and on how much?.....

thx

well looks like I found it but i had a litle fallier boot
can you tell me what was wrong...

AI overclocking : Manual
CPU FSB : 250mhz
AGP/pci : 66.66/33.33
ddr voltage : 2.6V
AGP voltage : 1.5V
V-link Voltage : 2.5V
HT frequency : 800mhz
memclock mode : Limit
Memclock to CPU ratio : 4:3 (DDR 266)

if you need to know something else that can cause the problem just ask:)

thx peace out

Thats too high for stock CPU volts.

Increase CPU volts, or lower HTT

Start out lower, and work your way up

finaly it worked whit this config:)

AI overclocking : Manual
CPU FSB : 220mhz
AGP/pci : 66.66/33.33
ddr voltage : 2.6V
AGP voltage : 1.5V
V-link Voltage : 2.5V
HT frequency : 800mhz
memclock mode : Limit
Memclock to CPU ratio : 4:3 (DDR 266)

and I get the result that you sad from 1800mhz to 1980mhz:)
so how do I go from here?whate do I start changing for test and what to I keep like it is now?
do I need programs?
and how do I change the CPU volts? can't find them in the BIOS...:$

realy thx to everyone who helped me

CPU voltage is in the JumperFree section. First you change the "CPU Voltage/Speed" to MANUAL. Then the CPU VOLTAGE is visable and you can change it.

And yes you need programs to test for stability. Use Google and search for "Prime95 download" and "SuperPI download". Download and install these programs.

Run the Prime95 torture test under the options menu for 10-20min. If you get no errors increase the CPU FSB from 220 to 230 and test again, if you get errors increase the volts a little and test again. Once you get no errors increase the CPU FSB again. Keep doing this until you find your maximum stable. Once you find max stable run Prime95 torture test for several hours to make sure its really stable, If it errors after a few hours lower your CPU FSB 2-3mhz and try again with a test for several hours.

As you increase CPU volts you also increase heat. So check your temperatures.
Use Asus probe program to check your temperatures. Keep temps below 55c at maximum when Prime95 is running for hours. If temps get too high lower your overclock or get a better CPU cooler.

If you get CPU FSB above 250 change the HT frequency to 600mhz

and in prime95 what option do I take for the test of 20 min and the test of severale hours
cus I don't get the programm...
and whate is the meaning of temperature treshold and polling interval...
can you tell me the best way to configure the bouth programs?

thx everyone for helping me now that I know the baisic's of overclocking i'll try to puch it as far as I can and will let you know what my max is

peace out

On my a8v deluxe, i have to set the cpu voltage to 1.575 to get it to be anything other than 1.4v, just a hint (if your board is like mine, 1.55 wont take anyway.) Somewhere in bios there is Cpu Voltage control, just keep looking till you find it. You should, all things done right, be able to get more or less 2.3ghz with that setup (no 2.5ghz+ for you im afraid, since the a8v tops out around 260fsb i find)

so I went to the bios again... and found on Power-> Hardware monitor that my V-cor is on 1,472 but there's no finding how to change it i've looked in the BIOS for along time...

this is what I rune now so i've increasd the CPU FCB whit 15 and I have a Temperature of 36°C

CPU FSB : 235mhz
AGP/pci : 66.66/33.33
ddr voltage : 2.6V
AGP voltage : 1.5V
V-link Voltage : 2.5V
HT frequency : 800mhz
memclock mode : Limit
Memclock to CPU ratio : 4:3 (DDR 266)

think i'm still save?

peace

hmm, well maybe you have the asus a8v -e deluxe, which possibly has no voltage control, but mmm.. Because my voltage and frequency (or whatever it is) option has - Manual, frequency, agp voltage, ddr voltage, cpu voltage, vlink voltage and maybe some others which i have forgotten (not in that order necessarily).

wen't to check it an this is what i found:

DDR-Voltage = auto | I can put it on 2.6V, 2.7V, 2.8V or auto
AGP-Voltage = 1.5V | I can put these on 1.5V or 1.6V
V-link Voltage = 2.5V | I can put these on 2.5V or 2.6V

you thik I got the right Voltages? or do I change?

leave all those as it is. I just remembered you need to change the option "CPU/VOLTAGE SETTING" from AUTO to MANUAL. It is in the same bios section as those voltages listed above. When you choose manual, a new line will apear allowing you to change cpu voltage. Experiment with it, to make sure voltages work properly (like i said, below 1.575 doesnt take for me) and then try to get it at about 1.55 (as a rule, do not go 1.6 and above)

are you sure? There should be 2 'manual' bits - one that unlocks the cpu fsb, and the other that unlocks the cpu voltage. look harder!

so I went back to the BIOS but gues what :p it's just not there....
I can make a picture of it if you want and send it to you if you want

i so hope there is a solution for it becaus i'm dieying to get this my the best it can
