Wanna See a Turbine Blow Up?

I wonder what his crew chief is saying right then. I don't think I want to know.

Wouldn't really be his fault, would it?

The guy who builds and maintains the engines is probably hanging from a rope by his nutsack still.

I'd think the opposite... the driver is hanging the mechanic by his nutsack. :)

That would make it difficult to walk.

i agree Glad no one hurt!
I agree. But if you notice the silver shell around the engine. That's a blast guard to protect against exactly what you saw there. Should the engine fly apart for any reason, the blast guard is supposed to obsorb the entire blast to protect the audience and track officials. The ones on that tractor look like they did their job, even if it did end up nearly cutting one of the guards in two.

My bet is that he took something into the engine during the run and threw a fin. Either that or one of his bearings seized. But considering the delay between loss of power (sudden drop of the nose) and the actual explosion, I'm thinking more likely that he took something into the engine he shouldn't have and at 10k+ RPM's, that probubly ripped the guts out of that engine in record time. The second one would have gone as a result of the first one dying because the first one would have seized the drive shaft and since both were slaved direct drive to the main driveshaft, that would have caused the 2nd engine (which explodes a split second after the first) to come to an instant halt probubly twisting the turbine shaft in half and throwing the fans all over the place.

Guarenteed even if the first one simply failed the 2nd one (the one cut in half) got it worse even though it got wrecked via colateral damage.

I dont believe that this is the case. I have never seen multipule engine pulling tractors that are set up that way. All I have ever seen use special high stall converters. How whould they start the engines seperatly if they were not isoslated from each other some way?

Easy. You have a clutch. However instead of a transmission you have two smaller gears turning against a bigger gear, hence direct drive. You can have direct drive and not have a transmission, but still have a clutch.

Heh. After seeing this, I kinda feel sorry for the guy who actually had the drivers cage sitting in the middle of the tracktor and he sat in the middle of the two turbines. Now you tell me that doesn't smell of shreaded driver should those ever blow. :Q

I certainly wouldn't want to be him.

whoooooooooooeeeey! That thing looked pretty sweet...I seldomly see tractor pulls on TV, and I've never seen a turbine being used....

That's a lot of smoke. Must've been fun finding the driver in there :)

No doubt. Sheesh, you'd figure he'd get it right. I love how he pronounced "recipricating". He pronounced it like "Recite Pro-Creating." ????
