That was surprisingly dull.

While not the sharpest knife in the drawer, your friends find you hip and edgy with a dark tonality giving off a vibe of apathy. On the plus side confusion and mixed messages are not your strong suits.

You don't know which end is up between Monday and Wednesday, but you aren't totally hating the state of confusion you appear to be in. It's fun to be slightly out of control sometimes! Other people move at their own pace on Thursday and Friday, and there's nothing you can do to budge them out of your way. The pace picks up on Saturday and Sunday, so be ready to sprint to the head of the pack when there's an opening. Remind others that your technical expertise stems from reading one too many forum posts claiming that jet fuel can't melt steel beams or 4 too many vodka gimlets.

You've bolstered my confidence to the hilt. I can feel it in my spine. Thank you for quenching my thirst for validation. May you one day be immortalized as a statue made out of Chosera stone.

I thought we have not rediscovered Damascus Steel yet?

We have not. What we have discovered is a way to fake a cheap copy that sort of looks like Damascus Steel and to call it Damascus Steel. It's like a Chinese counterfeit of a iPad, calling it real doesn't make it real.

No, we know how to make Damascus.

No, we don't.

We started faking it by laser etching ordinary steel to look like Damascus. That wasn't even close. Then things advanced to pattern welding to create a more authentic product that is pretty similar to Damascus. That's what's being done in the linked video. It's NOT Damascus Steel, it's only what passes for Damascus Steel. It's not authentic and anyone who claims that their pattern welded steel is identical to real Damascus is flat out lying. It only looks the same.

Given the penchant for people in the near East to exaggerate claims of efficacy and the fact that there are vastly superior modern alloys, the only real "utility" this type of steel adds is the appearance.

Modern metallurgy > pattern-welded steels

P.S. Anyone selling new production "Damascus" is just selling you pattern-welded or maybe even san-mai steel that is inferior in at least some respects to "original" (Lost technology) Damascus. And is also inferior to many modern alloys.

We know how to pattern weld, but my understanding is due to metal decaying at varying rates we don't know the "true" mineral content of Damascus steel.
I will retract my statement. We do not have true Damascus steel. However, Gag grossly understates our understanding of Damascus.

No, you grossly overestimate the ability of hucksters to fool suckers. The raw material is not the same. Period. The heating and cooling methods used are lost in time and are almost certainly not the same. The finished product is structurally different from real Damascus steel. Period. It looks the same, but it's not the same and nobody can dispute that. Not the same materials, not the same process, not the same results, NOT real Damascus Steel. The end.

So...it wasn't a joke?

Confused.

Screw this--I'm going back to that thread with the video of the chick and her huge funbags changing oil in that car.

Try not to be such a fuck wit. Pattern steel is not Damascus, true. The people who are actually trying to replicate Damascus have gotten close enough that it comes down to when is "authentic" authentic enough.
