Even the lowest income shoppers today can get a credit card, so layaway programs are next to useless.

You keep telling yourself that, but I (and people like me), get denied by EVERYBODY... even Providian, who preys on the low-income.

Besides using it to hide Christmas and birthday presents from the kids, my wife also uses the layaway at Wal-Mart to "reserve" items before a big sale. That way she doesn't need to fight the crowds and/or worry about the item being out of stock. They adjust the price accordingly when she claims the layaway. Man, she is going to be pissed! :D

Can't screw up what you don't have - All my rejection letters have the reason as "Insufficient Credit History".

You need credit to build credit, but can't GET credit without established credit.

Seems like if you want to get credit with no past credit history, you have to either be a college student or get a secured credit card (where you pay $500 in advance and get a $500 limit). After about a year with a secured card you should be able to get a non-secured card.

Good, it's about time they did something about it. Walmart gains nothing out of the service and all the costs associated with it are not made up in profit.

None of the stores have room for the stuff so trailers are rented and it's a real pain to find stuff in the trailers.

Layaway does not replace a credit card or rent-to-own, or anything similar. Layaway replaces self-savings (you get the items only after you've paid for them in full.)

But don't the trailers make Walmart shoppers feel more at home? That way they'll hang out longer and spend more money. Profit!!
