Hawaii I can see (overseas shipping), but why are Ok, WI, and Utah getting much higher prices for things? Nearly 200 more for the laptop...makes no sense. (I'm in OK so it means no reason to try for the laptop...)

Minimum markup laws. It is illegal to sell things below cost in those states.

If Crucial is correct and it's markup laws (i have no reason to doubt it) - then ironically it's BECAUSE of wal-marts and large scale gas station chains. I DO know that here in OK, that they passed a minimum price law for gas because large scale chains (shell, texaco, etc) can sell at or below cost and have it not matter because they make it up elsewhere (other states, and/or other items) whereas small mom and pop type stores simply HAVE to charge more than their actual cost to keep the store afloat. I do remember talk of a law like that for retail but never heard of anything more about it. But it was 3 or 4 years ago and small store owners were throwing hissy fits (and probably rightfully so) that stores like wal-mart were moving into small towns and intentionally underpricing them to force them out of business.

The dumping strategy.

I'm also interested in the laptop but I can't figure out any additional info from the website as to its specs, model number, or anything useful. Wondering if it is worth it to show up at 8 AM tomorrow & buy one, then return it later if not a good deal. Of course, they are only promising two per store so it may be academic anyway.

For whatever it is worth I looked up the most basic laptop on Gateway's site. It is the Gateway® ML6720 Notebook. Has an Intel Dual Core 2310 Processor, 1 GB of memory, 120 GB Hard Drive and a 15.4 screen..Here is the link: Gateway laptop .

Does that mean this is what Wal-Mart will be selling? Don't really know, as Wal-Mart might be selling off some older model, but this is the most basic laptop Gateway currently lists on their site. Like I say, for whatever it is worth...

quantity limits? hell, the walmart site is stating minimum 2 for the gateway laptop. Is that also acting as a maximum of 2 as well?

If true, then its sucks compared to the $399 Compaq at BB which had a T2310 dual core, 1GB, 80GB and a 15.4 brightview screen with X3100 graphics and dual layer dvd recorder...

Hard to imaginge that WM's offering would be so far behind BBs for the same price.

I'd say its true. Wal-Mart every once in a while has a Laptop for $399 out of the blue with a celeron CPU in it. I've seen it several times before.

The minimum markup law is in effect in OK; I was told this on the pre-Black Friday sale for the Toshiba HD-DVD A2; however, later that same day, I went back and it was marked to the same $99 price as in other states; so there must be a way for them to get around it; seems like a pretty antiquated law to me---but I do live in OK!!!!

Last time they did the laptop thing (pre BF for $350 - acer laptop) they had about 50 in both of the stores around me... I wouldn't doubt that they have a bunch, but I didn't specifically go check.
