So i was peeved when my local walmart went down to ONE price scanner early last year.
Then the store remodeled later that year and removed that last price scanner.

As a workaround, people used self checkout to scan the price.

Today, i found out the Walmart app has a price scanner feature.

You're welcome.
Happy shopping

Requiring an app to obtain prices of items at a store is utter horseshit. Don't feed the data miners.
Just about all major sites do it. The site would run fine through a browser on mobile, but they're going to try their hardest to push people to use their data mining happy app. Sites will remove functionality in mobile view that worked perfectly before just to push people to download a separate app.

A lot of major retail places already have that function in their mobile app. Very convenient instead of carrying that item to the fixed scanner and looking for one. I think Target stores has already gotten rid of their scanners too.

Wait, they don't just have the price on the shelf like every other store in the world?

Yes course, as it should be in any retail place. But there are instances that the current price and label is not placed imediately on that selling spot/product.
I've found items that were 75% off/clearance in their system, but the tag showed something else.

Nov 2018 at Target. Asked an associate to scan to the price if it changed from $209.98, but he told me it is updated. Brought to the red scanning kiosk, that showed $89.99 or something.
I didn't have the mobile app at time. Paid for it right by the electronics desk, associate wasn't happy. Maybe he wanted it for himself to buy later on.

Those of the crocs and sweatpants crowd that shop at one of those predatory dollar stores may not want to trust the listed shelf price. Ohio AG fined and then put a restraining order on Dollar General for placing a lower price on the shelf for items that scanned higher at checkout.

I admit, its been a year or so since I've gone to a Wal Mart. And I dont think I've ever been in a Dollar General even though they have opened a few of them up not too far from me.

Most of the DGs around here have one clerk in the store most of the time. Some times two. They can't keep up with the stock rotation and price changes. There have been a few times things have scanned higher at the register, but I'm pretty sure it was carelessness or lack of time. Any time I've raised the issue, they adjusted to the shelf price.

With inflation as bad as it is now days I wonder if we'll start seeing digital shelf price displays in stores so they can change them in real time. Would make it faster for stores to keep up with changing prices.

I've already seen some of them in my local Jewel-Osco, Walgreens, Target, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot and Lowe's. No need for the pricing associate to change the label, it's done automatically for that location. ;)
The initial cost for implementation is pricey, but it eventually saves on time and labor cost.

With modern data mining, prices could be personalized to the customer walking past.

Yeah-uh-huh. Sho could.

But expanding on that, they could display discounted pricing for contractors, business customers, Seniors, Vets, etc.

My local grocery store takes it one step further:

1. Scan items using app on your phone
2. Pay via Wi-fi on the way out
3. Uses a saved card or Apple Pay

People get upset because when the self-checklist line is backed up, I squeeze in on the left side & they think I'm skipping the line haha. Then the Mobile Pay box lights up (the range is pretty crummy so you have to wave your phone right under the box for the antenna to pick it up most times) & you're free to go! I saw a TikTok where they keep laundry baskets in their car for groceries, so my procedure now is:

1. Get the store & open the Scan It app
2. Wander around & scan my stuff straight into the basket
3. Check out in the walk-through Mobile Pay line, no self-checkout machine interaction required
4. Load my groceries from the cart into my laundry baskets
5. Bring the laundry baskets into my house to put away!

I've never had a problem finding a price scanner although yes there do seem to be less.

Ironically enough, I've noticed that the price tags being out of date at Target but not at Walmart.

wonder how many people 'miss' 1 or 2 items when they pay?

What is a Walmart?
Ha.

I probably been to one five times in the last 10 years. Once this past summer actually when I was camping out in the middle of nowhere in New York state. I was there with this girl Amy who lived on the upper east. We were in that Walmart for like 20 minutes.

We saw more really fat people in that 20 minutes then we normally see walking around our neighborhoods for a week.

We both got in my car afterwards and looked at each other and just were like what the fuck just happened? We both had the same questioning thoughts
