Walmart could care less about selling dvd burners. They sell them as a convenience for customers. Prices are controlled at corporate level.

Prices vary from location to location, depending on local competition.
Restated: The price you pay at one walmart is not necessarily equal to the price you pay at another walmart 20 miles away. If you frequented the hotdeals forum, you'd notice YMMV on walmart pricing.

Most prices in a geographical area of walmarts are the same. They vary when a deparment manager goes comping lower sale prices of other competition and then lowers the walmart price. Clearance items are the YMMV. Corporate hands the prices down though. (I have worked there almost 4 years)

Nope, there's 2 walmarts within 6 miles of me. One of them has higher prices on pretty much every single item.

why dont walmart compete with online retailer? i rather buy from walmart then onlines, its a pain when you want to return something so the low prices may sometime cost you more in the end when things dont go according to plan

I like being approached by their "computer experts" (high school kids) when I'm just standing around while a friend is browsing.

Are you dumb or something? Of course the store sells higher priced computer items than online vendors; they don't have a computer to go online and compare prices!

You're not going to find retail outlets selling things for less than on-line outlets. Brick and mortar stores are selling the convenience of instant gratification along with the product. Also, physical locations require more in overhead than do online establishments.

That how walmart makes money.
They lose out on small items like when they sell juices and snacks super cheap or those $5 DVDs. They rely on the average consumer who thinks because its walmart then its a good deal.

Why buy anything retail then, the prices are always more expensive?

It's because people like the ease of walking into a store, asking a salesman what is the best and being told what to buy. Think about it, if you were the general public (aka computer illiterate) you wouldn't have a clue about technical computer equipment, much less how much cheaper you can buy it online. Also, returning something to a retail store is usually a lot faster and more convenient than returning something to an online store.

I must admit though, I love Walmart. I just got a can of clear coat and a can of grey primer for $2.00 even. Optical drives, HERE I COME! Wussup?

Walmart is pretty much useless. If they sell something for less, it's because they push their suppliers to the limit, and when you do that, the quality suffers. The only thing I would get at WM would be liquid soap. Even then, it's not worth waiting in line.
