Makes no sense to me.

Because many banks will charge a fee if you don't have a min. amount or direct deposit.

Some people can't get bank accounts. Some people do it for convenience. Some people are just plain stupid.

I dunno, why anything on this earth? Only makes sense to the ones doing it, I guess.

There is a reason they shop at Walmart.....

Oh, yeah. It's the Walmart mentality.

See, you could have not responded to me, and I would have never known you shop at Walmart. At least you dont work there.

Right?

banks charge for checking? That sucks.
My two bank accounts and my parents , all different banks don't charge and there is no minimum.

Right?

Negatory, Ghost Rider. I do not shop there or work there. Financially I have no need to go to a zoo to save a few cents. It's not worth the aggravation.

Right?

There is nothing wrong with shopping at wal-mart, nor is there anything inherently wrong with the people working there.

At my bank and the bank that I worked at, you could cash checks for free if you had an account or the business/person had an account there.

We did make exceptions for the crazy people who came in to cash their "crazy check" from Uncle Sam.

Oh, dont get me wrong. I love Walmart. It keeps those people out of the stores I actually shop at.

Hah hit a nerve?

I shop at walmart for auto supplies, they have the best price for bulk synthetic oil and degreaser spray .... and it's couple blocks form my parents place🙂

That being said, i think the fact that they charge for layaway (the economics of that concept make my Master's degree cry) is far more telling of the people shopping there

Yeah there is. Walmart is a weed. It's a pretty horrible company, but people won't get rid of it because everyone is selfish.

It's like a credit report for your bank account history.

Being in the finance business, I can tell you that if you are in Chex Systems, you cannot open a bank account. It's like a credit bureau for checking account miscreants. Once a person is in the database they stay in there for 5 years. If a person is in chex systems and are lucky enough to still have a bank account, most merchants will find out and not accept their checks anyway.

I don't see what's wrong with shopping at WalMart when they have a lower price on many of the exact same items I could buy elsewhere.

I think people may oppose some of their business practices that result in them being able to offer lower prices.

Same here. Wachovia or PNC, both offer free checking, and as far as I know, there's no minimum.

Opening the account was free; everything except the physical checks themselves is free.

Ah, so they're there because they have bounced checks, or have otherwise not paid their obligations.

Moral of the story: Pay your bills on time, and don't buy more than you can afford.

Most people who shop at walmart have poor credit. In most, if not all states, you must provide them a credit report before you can open a checking account, and thats if your lucky after they check your credit if they give you one, and for it to be free, thats going to be a slim chance.

I have a free checking account, but we have to pay for our own checks, cannot have the atm credit card, and have to pay to get a print out of our bank statements. If we upgrade to the next level we can have all that, but they want us to have a min of $500 in the bank at all times, and thats damn near impossible, and if we dont have the $500 in there then we are stuck paying a fee to have the checking account. Now if you're one of the unlucky souls that cant get a bank account your places to cash a check are limited. Most places will take a chunk of your check to cash it for you, so what walmart is offering a damn good service to those who have had a bad run of luck, or just plain old sucks in life, in helping them to keep all the money they can by cashing their checks for free, at a place they will be shopping at anyway.

Not everyone has perfect credit, a lot of money, and has access to a bank account 😉
