Walmart.com DVD Rentals free for 30 days

I believe I read on the DVDTalk forums that Columbia House was looking into getting into online dvd rentals too. This will be interesting for Netflix. They have the benefit of a well established business but Walmart and Columbia House's money can get their regional warehouses and distribution systems up quicker than Netflix could.

Walmart is getting ready to start selling used cars. They will purchase thousands of off leased cars from the maker (like Ford) and sell them with a 90 day guarantee + warranty at the local dealer.

just started using the virtual cc numbers from citibank.
If i generate one now, is good til november 2002.
If i sign up early november for this offer, then 30 days
will expire in early dec and by then, cc virtual number is
expired. Therefore, if you forget to cancel, they can't
really charge u...is that a safe assumption, and.will that work??
I always forget to cancel offers like that!!!!
 
I believe I read that Walmart is only shipping from Georgia currently, but if they were to use their network of distribution centers then they could really provide awesome service.
 
Reminds me of Netflix, though there's was 20.95 per month and I'd imagine they wouldn't have as many distribution centers as walmart...though they did have one right in my state, made for pretty quick shipping and receiving.
 
Walmart has 105 distribution centers but that includes the grocery ones also so they have quite the potential to suceed at this.

This is true. The main distrubution center is 5 min. from my apartment here in Statesboro, Georgia.
 
The selection is quite bad. I have 15 items in my queue and most are "Very Long Wait." The only ones that have shipped are my Outlaw Star titles.

Props for an Arkansas company, too!

Signed up for this on Oct. 10th and I have still not received my second wave of DVDs. So two weeks only 3 DVDs and they have not even shipped out me next 3 yet. I live in Washington DC and it should not take this long for the mail to get back and forth to Georgia. I think they are having big logistical problems.
 
That's the bizarre thing about this service...they state they send out DVDs once you've returned one (so they can put a week between rentals), and that they only send one at a time....yet I've got 3 fired out to me, which I should have by Monday. Damned weird. Ah well...who cares if you only get 6 DVDs from this deal...that's 6 rentals YOU DIDN'T PAY FOR 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Can't beat that.

And yeah, their selection's kinda lousy, but I'm picking around titles that are odd (Asian, for example) or some of the Anime I've seen on shelves but didn't have an inclination to buy/rent.

Actually, I believe Blockbuster has joined the ranks. It's through a joint venture.........and you can get a MONTH FREE at this place too. Cool part is that you can have 4 movies at a time instead of 3. Check it out:

First, I'd like to say THANK YOU! for posting this PliablemoosePliablemoose....damned good deal 😀

Here's my experience....I signed up 10/23, had my first 2 by 10/26 (the third became lost in the mail...go figure). I sent back those 2 on Tuesday, 10/29, and had two new ones go out 10/31. I called Customer service 10/30 about the missing DVD, and they'll send out the next DVD on my list. Yeah, you don't get 3 at a time, but GEEZ....if you get the rotation going right, which I should have in the next two days, I'll end up having a DVD every two days 😀

My only 'beef', if you will, is that you really have to manage your list.....I clicked-up 30 titles to keep my list raw, majority were availble now....in 2 days 2/3 of 'm went to Short Wait up to Very Long Wait. Damned Anandtech Effect....LEAVE MY ANIME ALONE!!! 😀😛😎

Not bad. Primary reason why I didn't wanna do netflix was that they are in CA;however now I'm only 150 miles away from GA, so it may be worth looking into.

stay away ..far away..I've already cancelled this piece of crap. They sent out three on 10/24 Thursday. So I get one on Mon, one on Tue, and one on Wed...what a joke. But the #1 reason is because they don't have jack in squat...it's all "Very Long Wait". dvdrentralcentral.com (same as filmcaddy.com /blockbuster). Ah...can't tell what's in stock or not in stock and the shipment times are whacked also. Gonna cancel them in a few days too. Hmmm...so it appears the best two (IMHO) are greencine.com and Netflix. Well actually netflix went to hell in a handbasket bigtime. I stuck with them from 1999 to mid-2001. But from what I've been hearing they're improving. So anyway those two are your best bets...stay away from rentmydvd.com also...they're a joke bigtime.
 
There was an interesting profile of Netflix in the last issue of Wired (Dec 2002 I think) with a handy little chart comparing them vs Walmart and blockbuster and a few other competitors. As I recall, Netflix has 12000 unique titles with Walmart starting at around 5000, and Netflix has 12 or so distribution centers all over the country whereas Walmart is doing it from one initially (ie long waits for mail if you're outside Georgia).
I think Walmart beat Netflix by a buck a month for a similar package. The other guys are still in the planning stages or test market. I've been using Netflix for a month and loving it -fast back and forth via mail, big selection, no having to remember to return DVDs to the store, and driving there, and parking etc etc.
