If you got a cheap stud finder, just return or burn it. I bought a $15 one, lot of false readings, piece of crap. They only work down to an inch or so.
The expensive ones work deeper and probably more reliably.
Got one of those electronic wall stud finder but it's worthless. Giving false readings and going crazy. The walls in the garage are covered up so I can't see the studs there but the bracings in the garage roof are 24" on center. Can I assume that the rest of the studs in the house are 24" on center?
bracings almost always go to the studs, so 24" on center is a good assumption. 24' o/c is acceptable in some places, depending on your local building code. common convention is 16" o/c because most drywalls not perform well when installed onto studs @ 24" o/c.
