Whats the big deal here? This thing is just giving consumers a CHOICE. You don't like it? Don't buy it.

What would you folks rather happened here, armed stormtroopers march into RCA headquarters and force them not to make it? A law that fines RCA for making it?

How about this:

1) RCA makes this DVD player.
2) People who want it can buy it and use it in the privacy of thier own homes. They can even dress up as Little Bo Peep while they do so.
3) People like you (AND ME) who do NOT like this DVD player, can *gasp* - not buy it. We can keep watching our movies intact in the privacy of our own homes.
4) If enough people buy it to make it profitable, RCA will keep making and selling it.
5) If not enough people buy it to make it profitable, RCA will stop making and selling it.

No government involvment. No one is forced to do or not do anything. People are free to choose for themselves and do what they like in thier own homes.

Man, I could watch my whole DVD collection in an hour or two if it cuts out all violence, swearing, nudity and other potentially offensive movie content. Why would someone buy one of these instead of just not giving your kids access to your DVD collection?

Would it also skip over parts in Disney movies where the animated people get killed? That's violence.

What a stupid idea.

Are you an idiot or just stupid?

Look at how society has changed in the last 100 years. The most skatily clad women back then were showing a little bit of their ankle.. now they can walk around wearing a 1 mm thin piece of translucent nylon covering 5 square inches of their body and it's acceptable. And you're saying that censorship and freedom of speech are being reverse? Kill yourself, god damn.

Yeah, but that would involve taking responsiblity for their actions, and we can't have that. Not in America today.

Let me understand this please. A company figures out there is a market for filtering technology such as this and invests money to develop and market it to consumers willing to purchase it. These consumers willingly buy it with their hard earned money rather than lobbying for the government to censor everyones ability to see these movies with the deleted material intact. Somehow in all this you see a lack of personal responsibility? It seems to me to be a great example of personal responsibility.

It boggles the mind, doesn't it?

A private company gives people a CHOICE and some idiot start crying "FASCISM!" Not only that, but somebody who has probably NEVER used a "personal responsibility" argument in their life pulls one out of their ass and gets it completely wrong.

According to Aho, the studios' allegations imply that consumers "are violating copyright law when they use ClearPlay to mute and skip the playback of movies on DVDs that they have lawfully bought or rented."
LOL. Well, I've muted and skipped parts of movies for a variety of reasons. Guilty as charged!
Next thing you know they'll be calling you a thief for changing channels during a commercial.
Oh wait, nevermind.
Because of the ad skips.... It's theft. Your contract with the
network when you get the show is you're going to watch the
spots. Otherwise you couldn't get the show on an ad-supported
basis. Any time you skip a commercial or watch the button you're
actually stealing the programming.

Can't win with these jackasses.
If these people are blocked from self-censoring, the next thing you know they are going to lobby for government-enforced censorship.

IMO, the evening news is worse for children than violent and profane movies (or a bit of nudity). Children can usually distinguish between reality and fantasy, but the media often distorts the perceptions of reality with their "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality. Hence, children grow up being cynical and apathetic because they think that they are more likely to get shot or robbed on the street than they were 10, 20, or 50 years ago. They are raised to believe that the world is going down the crapper, and there is nothing they or anyone else can do about it, so they might as well accept it.

Anyway, that's a whole 'nother topic. :p

I said the fascism parallel was off-base; I admmitted as much. If you guys want to keep piling on to up your post count I guess that doesn't surprise me. And to the guy who called me stupid who can't spell "scantily", I don't think I need to say much more.

At the end of the day, this product is a symptom of not only parents' unwillingness to police what their children are doing and watching, but more importantly the predominant neo-conservative revolution we're seeing right now, in wake of <gasp> a bare boobie! I think it's silly, especially when we can see mutilated bodies on the 6 o'clock news almost every day of the week. I guess that's OK though.

Ultimately it would be cool if parents could police what their kids watch in an active, invloved way. This is just the next generation of net-nanny, passive filter-type merchandise that I guess I should have come to expect these days.

What would you prefer? Have the parents manually fast forward?

The only TV i watch are news and news channel, and i seriously can't remember a single time when i saw a multilated body during the prime news, even on the Fox network and CNN during the war. Are you watching Al'Jazeera by any chance?

I was going to respond, but you covered it. Huz, get a clue for fsck's sake. Next you're going to tell us the washing machine is bad because people don't take the "responsibility" of manually washing their clothes.

OH NOES! IT'S BUSH'S FAULT THAT WE ARE HAVING DVD PLAYERS LIKE THESE!!!!

What a load, WalMart has been pushing to censor content for years and years now. First, they don't offer CDs with any profanity, then they remove certain violent video games off of their shelves, and now this. Hell, I remember I was about to buy Shadow Warrior from there when it came out, only to find they *only* carried a version of it with the gore and "obscene material" completely deleted. This has been happening for a decade now, this has nothing to do with Bush.

I am at a loss to understand why this would upset anyone. Are people offended because other people might choose not to be offended? Is that what it's come to?

You may not realize it, but there are many movies that drop f-bombs for no reason and/or have nudity that adds zero to the plot. This is frequently done in order to escape a G rating which the studios don't want.

It's not likely anyone would want to use this device to watch a Tarentino movie, because too much content would be lost. On the other hand, you could take a movie like Beetlejuice - a very funny movie with completely gratuitous profanity - and it would lose nothing after having it stripped out.

I guess we'll find out if there's a market for such a device. You'd think the movie industry would be happy that their product could potentially find a wider audience, but I can't say I'm surprised at their reaction.

I think Huz's comment about the parallel with fascism was a tongue in cheek statement. No need to jump all over the guy...look whose having the knee jerk reaction here.

No, after reading his half of the repartee in here, I have concluded that he was in fact serious, and that his head is up his chute.

Wait... his head is up the what shoot? You say? His head is up his bum! I bet he could lick his pancreas from where his face is! In fact, the other day I was walking down the street, and I saw Huz, walking down the street, wearing his torso as a hat! :Q

No, really, though. All joking aside, Huz is just another wannabe-pundit whose understanding of things such as "what we are talking about" is misguided and incomplete.

I think the question is,
"What is the world coming to, that we need such a product such as this to censor what has already been censored?"

FYI: This thing apparently works by a panel of people working for ClearPlay who mark areas containing graphic violence, or nudity, or coarse language, and then just skips the markers as requested by the viewer/operator.

As a side note, I do believe Hollywood is too steeped in its ways. Many movies have profanity just for the sake of profanity, where profanity is not needed. In addition, sex scenes (under the guise of the misnomer of "love scenes") are all too common, where they are not needed at all. In a lot of movies I've seen, sex scenes and language really detracted from the experience - the shock factor drowned out the actual impact of the plot (which, I suppose, may be a bit of a good thing, as Hollywood's quality of writing isn't that great these years, either).
