Wal-mart Hot!

These Gamecube prices remind me of Dreamcast right before they announced it going EOL. Is Gamecube next?

Probably not since the GC is $80 for six hours on one day that just happens to be the largest single shopping day in the country. I doubt they'll drop prices on it again since they just dropped it to $99 like two months ago. Also, since the drop Nintendo is doing something like 4x the sales prior to the drop. Nintendo's also announced another system they're working on, but they've said that it won't replace either the GC or GBA. So I don't know why they'd discontinue the GC just yet.

i don't see the gamecube sticking around much longer....
don't forget, that was Nintendo's first CD based game system, VERY late to the party:
Philips-CDi
SegaCD
Playstation

others?

i dunno if u were saying cd an ment to imply otpical storage, but thats a dvd buddy

The money is in the games, not the system. Could Nintendo port their games to XBOX and PS2 and have decent sales? Sega seems to be ok when they quit selling hardware and went to software only.

Nintendo's aim has always been to get thier console below the magic $99.99 mark. Sales just take off when that happens. The next console to go EOL is going to be the PS2, followed in quick succession by the GC and XBox. The average time until replacement has historically been 3-5 years. The Gameboy is the only console that's really managed to succeed in going longer.

The rule also applies that once a company goes to $99, the system is soon to go EOL. Gamecube is distant 3rd in the console race with fewer games for it than the others.

Yeah, I think Nintendo wouldn't have liked for the GC to go to $99, but they needed to. Good deal for consumers though. The $79 Wal-mart deal is pretty hot.

I just got the 4 game zelda gc for 100$. Goddamn.
I bought the original PS2 for $300 and a $300 Xbox.

Your $20 difference? That's nothing. 😛

"Distant 3rd"? Last I checked, worldwide, they were ahead of the Xbox. In Japan, they're owning the Xbox with 631,400 units in 2003 vs. 78,800. (last week, 310 Xboxes were sold in Japan, compared to 500 PSones) Until the price drop, the GC and Xbox were fairly close in sales. Since then, the GC has been outselling the Xbox by a fairly large margin.

Yeah, but unless you're in Japan, this means nothing.

Seriously, as a U.S. Gamecube owner, where the Gamecube is a distant 3rd in sales right now, it's a legit concern I think. I also think that GBA sales will hold up Nintendo at least until the PS One handheld comes out, then all bets all off.

Alot of companies have pulled products out of the U.S. market in the past due to sales problems, I don't think Nintendo would do it, but it wouldn't shock me.

The Japanese are very protective of their home industries and MS didn't make it any better by overpricing the Xbox internationally for such a long time. I've never heard anyone claim the Gamecube has outsold the Xbox worldwide, except a few months after worldwide launch by Nintendo itself and NPD didn't back up their figures. 😛

It really doesn't matter. If you like your console, great. But consider that Nintendo didn't lower the price of the GC in North America out of generosity. 😛

I fail to understand your concern. Why does this not matter if you aren't living in Japan? It seems that it matters the same no matter where you live. If the system is racking up sales, does it really matter what country it's in? The aren't going to EOL a product that is selling well!

😕

Kraken: my point is, it'll be EOL when the other two are EOL as well. It won't go EOL prematurely. And like I said, in the US, the GC sales are more than the Xbox sales. It's ONLY in third place because of the GBA:
Hardware Sales in North America
(Updated: November 21, 2003)
Rank System Manufacturer Units Sold Total Sold
1 GameBoy Advance Nintendo 401,000 16,310,000
2 PlayStation 2 Sony 300,000 19,439,000
3 GameCube Nintendo 254,000 4,948,000
4 Xbox Microsoft 176,000 6,178,000

Total sold, it's still trailing. But not by that much. However, current sales have it closer to the PS2 than the Xbox.

Note:
I have a PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and a GBA. I don't have an Xbox simply because there isn't very many games that I want to play on the Xbox that aren't available on the PS2 or GC. (Project Gotham Racing is the only one I REALLY want to play)

I think it's funny how a repost of a deal turns into a console debate. Bloink, the special price for the GC has been know for some time and can be found (along with other "hot" deals) in the Black Friday threads.

dud: heh, it always starts when someone claimed Nintendo's dead. (they've been saying that for how many years now?) I never said they were the best, just that they weren't going anywhere any sooner than anyone else.

"The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

"Sega seems to be ok when they quit selling hardware and went to software only."
they quit selling hardware the public was brainwashed against
started selling staple title software @ the hardware the public was brainwashed for

"Yeah, but unless you're in Japan, this means nothing."
the only reason i'm not going in on this deal (it is good!) is that i don't like to wait inside walmart because it severely depresses me and i play japanese games (for the most part)
