I have a 4:3 TV. I don't even notice the black bars. I pay attention to the movie, not what's around it. If the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen bother you, why doesn't the black or silver border around the entire screen bother you?

My rant of Walmart. Years ago I went to purchase a bike....

You should have stopped there.

What did the OP say? Wal-Mart caters to who?

I actually went to Walmart today to get a key made... Man, I don't know what it is but it seems that all the freaks end up there.

LMAO!!!!!!!

I was at a Walmart in NJ looking for a movie that had just been released...
I asked the girl if they had it in the widescreen version - she commented "why would you want the widescreen version? - they edit the widescreen version to make it look wider by chopping off part of the top of the picture and part of the bottom of the picture." I told her that actually, it's the fullscreen version that's edited - they chop the left and right side off. She laughed at me! "What are you thinking? Why do you think they call it 'fullscreen' version - it's because the full movie is there." Well, uh, why does the fullscreen version say "edited to fit your television" and the widescreen version doesn't say that?

She continued to mock me for being stupid! *sigh*

At least you didn't go there to buy a bicycle.

Get off your high horse. When you don't have a lot of money paying $120 for a bike is reasonable.

I don't have a high horse. Don't have enough money to even claim to have one.

But when you consider that you'd have to buy three $120 bikes at Walmart to have one that lasts as long as a $225 bike from a bike shop, I think the math is simple.

It always killed me when parents would say, "I'm not going to spend more than $50 on my kid's bike because it's just going to get trashed in a year," not even taking into consideration that maybe it's trashed in year because it's a piece of crap.

Yeah.. but you also live in Auburn, OH. The entire population of Auburn could go to Wal Mart all at once, buy 9" cake pans and be out of there in 10 minutes. 😀

Unless of course you went to the Walmart in Cleveland. 😉

I've heard this so many times its not funny. This is why they shouldn't call them Fullscreen. Pan and Scan, Edited, or something else... Maybe they need a big poster sitting in the stores to show people how much of the picture they lose by getting Fullscreen. But then there are some titles where the Fullscreen shows more, but its not the way the movie was intended to be seen.

Anyway Wal-Mart is pretty bad to stock only Fullscreen movies.

I still pickup new releases (they are usually good about having Widescreen if its a new release, although the Fullscreen outnumbers them 3 to 1) and check the $5.50 dump bin once in awhile. While a lot of the DVDs are Fullscreen, I have found a few good DVDs in that bin.

Unfortunately the majority of people out there prefer Fullscreen over Widescreen. Film Studios recognize that and cater to it, even if it isn't the best way of viewing the movie.

Actually, I have to agree with this guy. When you have a smaller (under 27 inch) 4:3 screen, widescreen DVD's look like crap. This is especially true if you have an old "fish bowl" style television, where the screen is curved and the letterbox is distorted. Your average Wal-Mart customer is more likely to have a 20" RCA than a 60" widescreen 1080p Sony, so they cater their DVD collection accordingly.
