15% is on the low end? I use 15% as the standard - middle of the road. Things go ok, they get 15%; great service, friendly etc they get more (maybe)...things go poorly, they get 10%....
I have a friend who says that when he sits down at a table he pulls out a stack of $1 bills - maybe 10 or 20...
When the waiter/waitress introduces themselves he explains that this pile of $1 bills is their tip. Everytime they do something good, they get more added to the stack, when they do poorly they get some taken away.
i never saw him do this and I insist that any help would walk away from such an a$$hole..but just thought I would add that to this thread...

do all of them need to be sheltered by your big manhood?
The guy is cheap, but still many women would do that and not feel bad about it in the right context.

All of this is why tipping sucks. I like to know how much I am spending/ how much the food costs etc, without worring about what percent I have to pay somebody for doing their job.
The Amercia's is the only place in the world where people EXPECT to be paid tips. Everywhere else, people are paid by their employer, tips are just that, for extra special service, not expected service!
My 2 cents

Very well said.
It's even worse when the Tip is split between the chef/kitchen staff too.
Why should their wage depend on how well the other staff perform?

As a rule, I will NEVER tip if they mention it, and I will NEVER tip in the case of a pay-up-front scenario, if it's asked for on the receipt. I might leave one on the table if I have cash, but that's rare.
What do you mean by a pay-up-front scenario? When you pay before you eat or when you have to go to the counter in order to pay?
Pay before you eat. It's common at buffets.
never heard of tipping at a buffet.
really? I tip all the time at the buffets. Well, the ones where they come and clean your table every time you get up to get more food.. heh.
and I suppose I'm in the minority of tipping 20% most of the time. I guess I just have too much sympathy because I have quite a few friends who worked the restaurant business.
Seriously. Have your entire meal comp'd for her bitch attitude. She'd be licking marinara sauce off my nuts, give her a taste of home.Originally posted by: mwtgg
Should have spoken with her manager.

so me and a group of friends go to a bar. My tab comes out to $46 or so and i leave a $7 tip because there was another tab open for the table and he buddy was gonna tip himself to.
The waitress comes back and tells me that if anything is wrong with the service because she isnt happy with the tip. Anyway, i tell her my friend cut his lip because the glass you brought was chipped, she screwed up the food order, and the service was slow.
With that said, i thought i was being fair with my tip. And then she says "feel free to leave a cash tip on the table". At the point, i was sure i wasnt going to so I closed the tab and left. The waitress runs outside calling me and my buddies assholes. I throw a business card in her direction and tell her to take it up with the law firm I was for and advise her to go back inside and make earn her $7.50/hr.
Usually, i wouldnt even bother but i thought she was waaaaaaay out of hand. What do you all think? Was she in the right? Was I?

It's hard to have sympathy. They don't have sympathy for those of us who work fulltime and go to school fulltime to try and make a living.
