My a$$ wouldn't been out of my job if I had ever attempted to confront a customer over a tip, period. Not ethical in any circumstance. You will have at least one crappy tip a night (if indeed it was crappy by her standards) the night will even out for her somehow. It is never acceptable to run after anyone over a tip..now if you skipped a tab, look out I'd come after you..thats the only reason. The only things that happen to bad tippers if the are "regulars" is that are black listed as such, no one wants to wait on them and we won't bend over for them.

here's what really happened:

OP shafted the waitress by giving her $2 on a $50 bill. Waitress politely asked "Was there anything I could've done to improve the service? I'm really sorry if you were unsatisfied. Let me offer you a free meal on your next return." OP was startled by this, as the service was the best he ever had, and he thought $2 on $50 is a reasonable tip.

15% is on the low end? I use 15% as the standard - middle of the road. Things go ok, they get 15%; great service, friendly etc they get more (maybe)...things go poorly, they get 10%....

When the waiter/waitress introduces themselves he explains that this pile of $1 bills is their tip. Everytime they do something good, they get more added to the stack, when they do poorly they get some taken away.

i never saw him do this and I insist that any help would walk away from such an a$$hole..but just thought I would add that to this thread...

I think the whole tipping system in the US is crazy, people expect it now which defeats the purpose of a tip.

If I'm eating out I will pay the same price all the time, if the service is particularly good I might tip a small amount (like 5%), if the service is bad I refuse to pay.

The Amercia's is the only place in the world where people EXPECT to be paid tips. Everywhere else, people are paid by their employer, tips are just that, for extra special service, not expected service!

This man has the right idea. A tip should only be issued if service has been above average. Over here you never tip at a bar or pub, for a start it's patronising passing trinket spare change to the lowly staff. People seem to gave gotten way too greedy in the US, and it seems bar managers have decided to pass to burden of paying their staff onto the consumer which is wrong. I'm not prepared to be put under pressure to decide what to pay the staff. The manager should do this. If I buy a £2 beer, that's what I want. I don't want to pay the same again for someone to pass me the beer, that's just dumb.

At a restaurant (so long as it's not part of the bill), 10% tops is fine for decent service, but I happily walk out without tipping very regularly if the service has been just average (staff being rude, staff not talking or being friendly, staff not being able to speak english in england, etc). If a waiter has been friendly, had a chat, put a bit of effort in, then I happily tip because they've done more than the bare minimum. It's a simple **FAIR** process that needs to be enforced otherwise you get cases of greedy motherfvckers who expect your money despite the service they offer, and even dare to argue the amounts. The US has it very wrong here and needs to fix it.

It's even worse when the Tip is split between the chef/kitchen staff too.
Why should their wage depend on how well the other staff perform?

You are missing the tip concept in food service. the 15% tip is for the service...not as a favor. Kitchen staff arguably can be included since they are part of the service, usually in these circumstances the payscale is better all-around.

If you get crappy service a lesser tip can be expected, but service level goes with establishment....if you want 5 star service you cannot think of Sonny's BBQ as such a place.

Pay before you eat. It's common at buffets.

and I suppose I'm in the minority of tipping 20% most of the time. I guess I just have too much sympathy because I have quite a few friends who worked the restaurant business.

It's hard to have sympathy. They don't have sympathy for those of us who work fulltime and go to school fulltime to try and make a living.

This is by far the most idiotic thing I have seen on ATOT.

There should be no sympathy...for one those going to school fulltime are a minority. Most everyone is working full-time. If you have to do both, why should they feel sorry for your poverty.

Don't eat out.

Also for those claiming they have no idea what the meals would cost them then...it's simple figure in a 15% overhead. If you need to use your TI-89A or any other calc, feel free...this is an open book/open note test.
