The Sims 3 Copy Protection
March 26, 2009 06:10 AM

Hello everyone I wanted to share news with you regarding our copy protection plans for The Sims 3.

We?ll have more information for you as we get closer to launch about everything we?ll have to offer on TheSims3.com and The Sims 3 Store, but we have heard your requests over the past months and here is our plan for The Sims 3.

The game will have disc-based copy protection ? there is a Serial Code just like The Sims 2. To play the game there will not be any online authentication needed.

We feel like this is a good, time-proven solution that makes it easy for you to play the game without DRM methods that feel overly invasive or leave you concerned about authorization server access in the distant future.

We?re really excited to bring you the game for the PC and Mac starting June 2, 2009. The extra time we?ve taken to polish the game has resulted in an even better game experience for you to enjoy and we can?t wait for you to see for yourself!

Thanks for your passion and your loyalty.
Rod Humble

PS - Doesn't mean there's not DRM... just means there's no online authentication... but still... this is EA we're talking about!

Its a ploy to force us hardcore gamers to try out the casual gamer side of things and get addicted to the Sims series ... I'd rather gnaw my fingers off joint by joint then play any of the Sims series (unless they come out with a Sims serial killer game).

Have you ever played any of them?

Anyway, "disc based copy protection" doesn't rule out SecuROM rootkits, even if there is no online activation. Yeah, I'm happy there's no online activation, I just don't trust EA whatsoever.

They need to clarify whether or not this still involves Securom in the same manner as Fallout 3.

Maybe EA actually did some research, and found that the Sims target audience doesn't dl cracked games?

Can't sneer at the game that has the greatest female user base. Well other than the usual 'EA really screwed up the series' talk. I know I've gotten asked out on dates by women when they found out I had The Sims on my computer....

The Sims 2 was the second most pirated game last year.

Which doesn't imply that the Sims 2 target audience - the ones that are willing to pay $$ for it - pirate games. It could just as easily imply that a bunch of people who are only willing to pay $0 for it downloaded it to see why it was so popular.
