Wait until the next generation?

Right now I have an Athlon 64 2800 socket 754 system. Would it be better for me to wait until the next generation from either Intel/AMD to upgrade? I'm thinking about the new Core 2 Duo... but not sure if it would be worth it. Would I actually see the performance increase in something other than a benchmark?

Well, figure out what you use your computer for and look for indications that you'll get improved speed. That is what benchmarks are for afterall. Without knowing what it is you do with a computer, it's extremely difficult for anyone to give you an answer to your question. If I absolutely had to guess, I'd say you'd see an improvement even in gaming (if you upgraded your video card along with your processor).

I'm sorry I probably should have included that.

I do use my system for games and have a Geforce 7900GT. It seems to have kept up with every game I have used it for... so far anyway. Last thing I used it for was Prey. Didn't have any slow down.

I do a lot of desktop work. Browsing, Email, Word, etc.

I will upgrade to Vista as soon as it is released... don't know if a CPU upgrade would matter much in that case from what I have?

It doesn't sound like you do much multi-tasking so the dual core aspect of newer procs really won't help you (with current software anyway). Also, since the only stressful activity you do is gaming with a single fast graphics card, upgrading to conroe when playing at high res/settings will only net you very modest gains.

With that in mind, I would stick with what you have until you see a need for more cpu power. I'm in a similar situation. I'm kinda itching to get a fast dual core proc but I really don't need one.

Best upgrade you can do is top up your system with 2gigs total of ram,vista loves the ram.

Doesn't sound like you 'need' an upgrade. If you are happy at present and want to upgrade to Vista at release, save for an all new rig - nothing like a brand new OS on brand new hardware. Reminds me of the time I went from Pentium-II with Win98 to a Pentium-4 with WinXP Pro.

When things start to run like crap and every major game on the market is optimized for dual-core, do it then.

Get 2gb ram.

Wait for 6+months and do the Vista(4GB)-Core 2 Duo-Dx 10 upgrade together.

and who loves vista? wont be out before 2007 and i wont be using it before 2008.
