Wait, stop the presses!

What did you do? Read the headline and stop?

According to the studies, increases in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere over the next century could raise Arctic temperatures as much as 5 degrees to 8 degrees.

The warming could raise global sea levels by up to 3 feet this century through a combination of thermal expansion of the water and melting of polar ice, Overpeck and Otto-Bliesner said.

Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide are chemicals that have been increasing in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution, raising fears of altering the planet's climate by trapping heat from the sun.

Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton University, who was not part of the research teams, said one point that stands out is "that a modest global warming may put Earth in the danger zone for a major sea level rise due to deglaciation of one or both ice sheets."

Got back and troll in OT.

Stop the presses, Americans have a shocking lack of critical reading skills!

Seriously, the two ideas are not mutually exclusive. It's true, warming and cooling trends on Earth ARE cyclical. But there is substantial evidence that THIS particular warming trend is caused (or at least helped) by human actions. Period, end of story. If there is any respected, peer-reviewed scientific argument to the contrary, I've yet to hear it.

Yeah scientists have known that there have been equally severe temperature changes throughout history (including last 1000 years). They are scared that these sentiments will be used by business as an excuse to do nothing. What is certain is that we are not helping the situation by our CO2 emissions. But its very possible that in 100 years the coastlines will be different than they are today, and people don't like change.

I love how the 'head buried in the sand' group points to cyclical trends from thousands of years ago, yet completely ignores the fact that, for the first time, inhabitants of the planet are pumping out billions of tons of CO2, something that no previous natural cycle has had to deal with.

I read a great article on the effects of warming and the subsequent release of CO2 that is basically under the ice, I'll try to find the link

Lemme see... glaciers shrinking, check... animals indigenous to warmer climates moving northward (see the 9 banded armadillo last paragraph)
ozone layer depletion.
You're right, it's not happening. The whole global warming conspiracy jig is up. You saw through us, we just wanted you to stop pushing the armadillo northward. Nothing to do with coastal flooding, loss of natural habitat, unknown meteorological consequences.
It's about the damn armadillo. :disgust:
