Wait for DDR or get MSI K7T-PRO2A?

I want to put together a 1ghz thunderbird system around Christmas (or maybe a little bit after Christmas). Should I wait for DDR or go ahead and get a KT133 board? I'll probably get the MSI K7T-PRO2A if I do.. I've heard the abit kt7 and the asus one have some stability problems.

So should I wait for DDR or go ahead and get a k7t? People say that DDR is supposed to be out any day now? I'm not sure when it's supposed to come out.

Thanks.

Well, here is my buck and 1/2 worth

Go for the Pro2-A. Here is why. Not only will you have to buy the new(Version1) issues of the DDR mobo's, you will need the new higher FSB processors and DDR(PC1600/2100) Ram to take advanage of the 10%-20% increase in speed. If you got the bucks, sure....but most of us have some sort of budget. Also, if braggin rights are important, then one of the first DDR's on the block would also be cool.

But, When the New 266 chips come out, the old ones will start to drop in price. With the pro2A, you will be able to OC that Cheap 1 gig tbird to 1.25+ I just think it will be a few more months before it becomes feaible to buy brand new technology.

Ofcourse, by June of next year, I WILL have a chip that hits 1.5gig on a 266 machine!

Sorry for the ramblins, just hate to see peeps spend too much money (I've spent enough for everyone ;-)

Cool.. thanks for the suggestion. No, I don't have the big bucks to spend. I've read posts of people saying that the DDR mobos and RAM will be about the same price as current mobos and sdram. I just don't want to kick myself in the butt the day after I get my k7t-pro2a machine together.

I personally wouldn't bother waiting, look at the preview of DDR on HardOCP, the only place where gains were noticed was in synthetic ram benchmarks ... like SiSoft Sandra's ram benchmark ... and what most know is that these benchmarks don't mean crap. DDR does little for overall system performance, but if you enjoy bragging about synthetic ram benchmarks ... then go for it.

I agree with the others here. I would go ahead and get the kt7 if you need a computer around Christmas time even if DDR motherboards become available then. It always seems to me there are hiccups when new technology comes out due to chipset drivers, video card conflicts and so on. I plan to buy a DDR Athlon myself, but will wait 6 months till May or June when DDR has had more of a chance to become more main stream and the motherboard manufacturers get a few motherboard revisions under their belt and begin adding more features and increasing stability. Just my 2 cents...

I got the k7t pro now also. Mainly because I didn't have a choice of waiting until the ddr boards came out ;). Hoever I think that it is still the right solution because this way I don't have to buy any new ram and I know this is a stable and fairly mature board to use.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.. I wasn't sure how great DDR is supposed to be. I'm going to go ahead and get the K7T-PRO2A soon. Here's my plans so far (if anyone cares):

1 GHz Thunderbird
MSI K7T-PRO2A
128 MB cas2 pc133 from crucial
45GB IBM 75GXP
Antec KS282 and PP303X p/s
Sb Live! Value

That's the only stuff worth mentioning; I'll get a GeForce2 MX when a game I feel like playing comes out ;), and I'm keeping my eyes on the Hot Deals forum for a good CD-RW drive.

Thanks again.

ctucker, buy the MSI K7T PRO2A now ,DDR is still new so let the dust & all the bugs settle, also there are faster newer DDR board coming out down the road(DDR2 etc) so even if you purchased a DDR board it would not stay up to date very long.

:)
