I thought for sure this was going to be a necro thread, but it is apparently you guys falling into the media nomenclature trap.
 
They call them drones but they're actually just quadcopters. What makes them a drone is they have a GPS unit and autopilot built in that can follow a set of pre-programmed way-points.

This, more or less.

Quadcopters have been around for a long time... Putting cameras on them has also been around for a LONG time. It's just not until recently that you could do it as easily, cheaply, and with decent camera performance.
 
The first "drone" I seen was a video of a seagul that picked up a mini camera that was turned on. 😱 But yeah these things have been around for a while, but just recently have they become better and more popular.

This is where having a 3D printer is probably useful as you can build stuff like this or make parts for ones that you broke.
