Wacky Duron Issue

No responses in Tech Support, so I thought I would try here since this is CPU related:

I am running an Iwill kk266 with a Duron 700 OC'ed to 1 GHz. I recently replaced it with an XP 1700+ and put the Duron into a new computer I built for a friend. Problem is, the new computer won't post with the Duron (board is Shuttle AK32L - VIA KT266 chipset). I took the Duron out and put it back in my Iwill...boots like a champ. I put the 1700+ in the Shuttle board...it also boots just fine. Any ideas why the XP works in both boards, but the Duron only works in my Iwill?

Thanks for any help y'all can give.

when you tried the duron in the shuttle board what did you have the fsb set at?

also did you check for newer bios revisions?

is there a jumper on the shuttle setting the FSB to 133? perhaps when you are plugging your Duron in, it is trying to set the chip at 7 * 133 instead of the 7 * 100 it should be.

I've seen incompatibility issues using older Spitfire-based Durons on the new mobos. My MSI KT3 Turbo will ID a spitfire correctly when booting up, but the only voltages available are from 1.5-1.6v (WTF?). Of course, it cannot boot all the way like this.

Boonesmi and yodayoda:

There is not a jumper for the FSB on this board...it is done in the BIOS. Judging from the fact that my 1700+ is recognized as an 1100 MHz chip, I'd say the FSB is set to 100 as default. Anyway, I have been running this Duron 700 at 933 (7.0 x 133) for over a year anyway. ;-) What else you got?

Richardito:

I thought I heard about this a while back, but I could not remember if a fix or workaround was found. What you described is probably what I am facing. Any resolution for this?

Thanks, y'all.

a couple things you can try

are you using the same hsf for both the duron and the 1700+? some boards wont boot if a hsf isnt plugged into the cpu fan header on the motherboard.

are you using the newest bios revision? also did you try any an older bios revision?

good luck 🙂

Different heatsinks, but the HSF fan plug is plugged into the header on the Shuttle mobo.

Someone else suggested a BIOS revision and I am currently looking into that option. Will probably try it tonight.

Yup...but I don't remember the exact number. I can get that, though. Is that information you would like me to gather? 🙂
