W7 Installer Mess

Hi. (hope this is in the right forum)

I have messed up my W7 installer in the drive I boot into.

And, since we can't download 5 as a stand alone, I tried to run sfc /scannow....and, COULD NOT, I get "Resource Protection Could not start the service."

Everything works normally in my backup drive, so I considered doing a reverse clone of it to my main drive, cept I have not updated my last clone from my main one to my backup drive for a while, so if I did the reverse clone I would loose things.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks.

I don't understand the comment about downloading 5??

Anyway, you might try Tweaking.com and download/run their All in One Repair Tool.

Hi, and thanks much for weighing in.... I fixed it and will explain.

But first, by 5, I meant the version of Installer which is loaded in W7. One can download previous versions (right for XP) from MS as stand alone, but beyond that, no.

So, I just did the logical....went back and thought, what did I do to cause this? I realized, I had uninstalled an app using Revo Uninstaller, followed up with their clean up registry items and all left over files, which I always do.

So, I just went back into Revo, went into my backup there, found the app and hit restore in the tool bar, and the deleted reg items were immediately restored.:ninja:

Now, everything is normal again. Including I can run sfc /scannow normally, tho now, I do not have to.

This is esp nice, cause I already got out my W7 disk to do a repair install, and now, that will not be be necessary.

on a side note, I stopped using Revo Uninstaller because one time, I had formatted, clean install, then start monitoring every app with Revo Uninstaller to have a perfect uninstallation afterwards..

well one day, Java got an update, so I uninstalled the current Java with Revo Uninstaller, after that my whole Firefox profile was reset and I had to redo everything which took me an hour!

never using such utilities no more

Hey, Neo!!

Well that's valuable to know, sad in ways I now relate to. Is true, we are posed to get rid of old Javas when we get new ones, but I don't. Yes, Revo, if you use all its features, is Draconian, so, as I learned today, U gotta be careful, but remember, I also used Revo to restore things! And that really did unmess my mess.

I still like and will use my Revo, cause if we are careful, it uninstalls things more completely than any other app.

But U bet, we must be careful!!!!:sneaky:

It's good to determine, if and when we may be indulging Get Gone or Off With Your Head out of pain/frustration/anger, when sometimes, if we just learn what happened and why, we can become more discerning, and not have to throw the baby out with the bathwater, and just throw out the bathwater.

Well, sumthin like that.😉
