W2k3: Remote Procedure Call fails > auto shut-down> HELP!!!

I'm running Win 2003 Server and all of a sudden I have started getting the message "The RPC failed to respond" and the machine automatically shuts down/restarts. This can happen 2 minutes after boot, or 2 hours and I can find no apparent cause. Event Viewer gives no explanation.

What could cause this? How do correct it, or alternatively how do I disable the auto shutdown? The machine appears to work perfectly well during the 1 minute countdown to shut-down.

Somebody help me please.....!

ah heck! My first virus in....I don't know how long. Serves me right for not installing a scanner while evaluating W2k3! Thanks a lot for helping out!

It doesn't matter that you didn't install a scanner. It exploits a flaw in the RPC service to infect you remotely. No anti-virus utility is looking for that. The only way to prevent infection is to keep up to date with microsofts security patches...so do that ;)

Hmmmm, strangely the Symantec scanner found nothing. I have installed the update though, so we'll see how it goes from here..... I might be back. :)
