W2k3: Remote Procedure Call fails > auto shut-down> HELP!!!

I'm running Win 2003 Server and all of a sudden I have started getting the message "The RPC failed to respond" and the machine automatically shuts down/restarts. This can happen 2 minutes after boot, or 2 hours and I can find no apparent cause. Event Viewer gives no explanation.

What could cause this? How do correct it, or alternatively how do I disable the auto shutdown? The machine appears to work perfectly well during the 1 minute countdown to shut-down.

Somebody help me please.....!

You have the Blaster virus.

Get the scan and clean tool, then patch up your system.

ah heck! My first virus in....I don't know how long. Serves me right for not installing a scanner while evaluating W2k3! Thanks a lot for helping out!

It doesn't matter that you didn't install a scanner. It exploits a flaw in the RPC service to infect you remotely. No anti-virus utility is looking for that. The only way to prevent infection is to keep up to date with microsofts security patches...so do that

Hmmmm, strangely the Symantec scanner found nothing. I have installed the update though, so we'll see how it goes from here..... I might be back.
