w2k\pro--IE WILL NOT OPEN WEB PAGES

Here is what's happening:When I connect to the web with my dial up,
and then I try to open IE\6 it won't open any web pages,
not even the MS updates page,
and this is what I usually do to open a webpage,
just after I'm connected to the web, I've a folder with my frequently used short cuts\ links\webpages,
I click on the link that I want it to open,
and bingo ! I'm there,
( I've a 56 modem dialer that works fine for me)
but now the problem is that when I click on a link the page won't open at all,(task manager show it's running)
and the link\icon just sit in the task bar, and the restore button is dimmed ,

and this is the same with the IE \icon on the task bar, explorer won't connect me to my home page as well,
I'm writing this from wxp-pro which is installed on the same rig,
and there is no problem with wxp pro\ explorer 6. The problem is in w2k\pro which I upgraded to explorer 6,

and it was working fine until today,
after this problem started,
I've scanned for viruses with norton (updated,)
and it found NADA !
I also scanned with Ad-Aware, but it found lot's of reptiles and they're goners now,
I also defragged and it didn't help at all,I knew it wouldn't but I did cause it needed anyway,
but what's going on here,

I need instructions on how to fix this calamity!
PS: can one reinstall service pack1 which in my case contain just IE\6 and OE\6,
over itself,
which is saved in a windows folder! Thanks OH, one more bit of info, I can open outlook express and get my mail OK!

It should be possible to uninstall and reinstall IE6 yeah.

Have you checked all of the internet options in internet explorer to ensure that a proxy server has not been setup or some other settings isn't messing things up?
