w2k network properties: Why display packets versus bytes?

Hi,

In win2k, most of my machines with network cards will display "bytes" recieved and send, but I just got the netgear FA410 notebook NIC and when I click on network card properties, it displays "packets" recieved and send. Why is this?

The reason I'm asking is because file transfers are very slow with this network card. I get about .5 megs a second when I use IPX as the protocal. All the other computers using IPX can hit several megs a second. Anybody have an idea about this?
