Machine had been up and fine for five days, decided to come over here and look around for info on this problem I'm having and locked up. Rebooted, came back to the page with nothing else running, locked up again. Seems the forums pages really kick in this problem.
Situation: Two computers, both running W2K, one with IE6, other with IE5.5. One using Radeon, other using GF2. One using ECS onboard sound, other with TB Santa cruz. Both Athlons, both 256meg of Crucial Cas2 ram set to relaxed timings.
With this computer, if I try scrolling through a webpage I can almost instantly expect the OS to lock up. Mouse will still move around for a few more motions, but click a couple times and I get a single beep from the motherboard speaker and that's it. Whether I try cont-alt-del to get to task manager or not before the mouse locks up it fails to respond. Watch DSL activity lights and see they stop as well so background processes have frozen too, not just display.
I can use the scrollbars and be fine for a time, but if I use the scroller in the mouse - lock up. Not just browser crash, full OS hard lock. Started with autodetected mouse drivers. Installed actual logitech drivers. Saw MS has an update for them and let them install - no changes. *EVERY* update on the Microsoft auto update page installed except for the euro conversion and that stuff.
With the other computer I can scroll with a bit more success, but scrolling will lock it up as well. Initiating a quicktime plugin causes the same thing, while viewing a 360* picture for a product description it'll lock.
Neither system exhibited this behavior with W98. Other than both being athlons, having the same mouse (with different drivers tried) and W2K they are dissimilar.
Neither system overclocked. Neither video card overclocked. Good temps. Voltages look good other than the 5v rail on this one is low (as it has always been with this Enermax), voltages on the other are almost perfect to spec. Can run games for hours without trouble, encode videos, scroll like a madman in business apps - do anything I want - except scroll around in IE or use the quicktime plugin. Assuming other plugins to IE will cause it too, frankly I've been avoiding using the browser unless I absolutely have to.
Even if you're not sure, please offer an idea or ask a followup.
