W2k install problem

I been working on this for a least a day now, and well, i stumped...

A friend of mine picked up a copy of w2k and wanted to install it. First we tried booting fomr the cd, but right after the "Do you need to install any third party drivers, it locked up hardcore, with the floppy seaking like crazy. never seen this before....🙁

Then we tried booting from floppy, dies in the same exact place...

Hell we tried putting 98 into the machine again, and it freezes in the same darn spot..

Suggestions? My next step is to just dump the cd to the HD, but if anyone else can come up with anything.....?

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. I do my install off the HD with the i386 directory. You may want to try this. Just copy the i386 off the CD to your HD and use a win98 bootdisk. I am confused with "Hell we tried putting 98 into the machine again, and it freezes in the same darn spot.." 98 and win2k have two different installs, so I don't know what spot you are talking about. If you can not boot and copy the i386 directory to the HD, then I would look into a new HD. But, if you can, try installing win2K from the i386 directory on your HD. Do a quick format of your HD and copy the system files with format c:/q/s. This will enable you to boot the PC without a floppy. One thing you may want is smartdrive. If you feel comfortable editing your autoexec.bat, then get smrtdrv.exe from somewhere on the net and copy it also to your HD. Put the file name in as the first line of your autoexec.bat and save. Copy the i386 directory to your HD and run the setup from the directory. You will need to boot with a 98boot if you want to use your cd, or copy the 98boot to the HD. Nowq, everything should work fine. Best of luck.

thank ya, i'll try that later next week when i head back down to his house..
BTW i was meaning similar spot,when the setup initalized, not same, wording error on my part..🙂
