i've been getting this "windows - corrupt file" error stating this:

"The file or directory \WINNT\CSC\csc0.tmp is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."

i've run the chkdsk util many times, in fact it still runs everytime i boot up. i've looked on microsoft knowledge base and it tells me to reset my offine files and i've done that. the next time it boots up, it will be fine. but later on in the day, the message will pop up again randomly. i've also done a virus scan and nothing was detected. i can't seem to actually find this file in the directory so i have no idea what is wrong here. anyone experience this?

also, how do i get the chkdsk to stop running everytime on bootup?

It is my understanding that "tmp" files are temporary files that can be deleted with no problems.

i understand that tmp files are deletable too but the case is that i can't even find this file on my computer. i've looked in the directory unhidden stuff and still don't see it. i have no idea why it's saying that the file is corrupted.

well anyhow, my problem now has escalted further. the "corrupt file" error just popped up every now and then and i went ahead and threw on W2k SP2 and hoped for the best. next thing i knew when i got back to my computer after a few hours, i had a blue screen. reboot, went away. but then my computer started rebooting on it's own. i understand that it is because of the option selected in system properties. i think i might just reformat the machine again. kind of a pain considering that this build was only together for 3-4 months. =(

Yes that does blow. Do yourself a favor and pick up Norton Ghost. I've had to rebuild my unit numerous times until one day a friend introduced me to this amazing program that could restore your computer to the status of the last backup.

Ever since then, I never had more than a 20 minute hiccup. I make an image about one a month with CDRWs so if I really mess things up or if my registry gets all wacky (sounds like your problem) I can restore it.

I know this isn?t an answer to your current problem, but maybe some assistance to avoiding a reformat in the future.

PS. I also recommend that if you do end up reformatting that you burn an image of the ?freshly installed? OS before you load any drivers or other software. Good luck.

thanks for the suggestions anyways, i have used norton ghost at a prior job. it was used to clone user machine and it was very convient when used to rebuild messed up machines or just to clone new ones.

it kind of bugs me that w2k doesn't have a "scandisk" util like 98 did. the chkdsk doesn't seem to be workign for me. it gets scheduled on reboot but the check doesn't seem to yield anything. any way to extrapolate good error scanning data for w2k?
