W2K and DX8 problem

My wife's pc has been locking up during Unreal Tournament. Only game she plays so don't know about other games. I have been running 98 with DX 8 and had no problems. Well, I put W2K on mine and DX 8 and guess what? Thats right UT locks up. Now, the game is still running but you lose keyboard and mouse function. All you can do most of the time is reboot. Others have this problem also http://www.instagib.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002684.html Is there a DX Uninstaller that will work with W2K? If I have to reinstall it'll be back to 98 because also my wife's pc gets errors after closing proggies constantly. Her entire pc is maybe a month old and has hardly anything loaded on it. Please help.

If I remember right whenever you go to install DX it will give you the option of Reinstalling it. So just go back to DX7. I did notice that windows updater did not list DX8 as an option to be upgraded, yet win98/Me did...

To uninstall DirectX 8 and go back to an earlier version, you have to download a DirectX Uninstaller. Microsoft doesn't distribute these, but you can find one version at www.tweakfiles.com. They are NOT guaranteed to work perfectly, because DirectX 8 is NOT meant to be uninstalled. Microsoft warns you of this when you download and install it.

Thx, but I have looked at a couple of uninstallers including the one at TweakFiles and they all say NOT for W2K. It may be 2000 and not the Dx8 though. Any other ideas?

No we are both running 436. This is definately a W2K problem. 98 ran fine. Installed W2K, crashed the very next day. My wife's just crashed again about an hour ago. MIE hangs, error msgs all over the place when closing proggies, all kinds of crap. We only play UT so I don't know if it would happen in other games. Could the problem be that we didnt have the full version of W2K so had to use the upgrade? The easy answer is yes that has to be it, but really, how probable is it? Would be a bummer to have to find $200 somewhere to buy it. We network so definately do not want to go back to 98.

The problem is not that you upgraded win2k professional vs. a full install. I have a full install of win2k pro with sp1 installed. I also like to play UT and when I installed DX8, I started having crashes. I find that if I boot clean and play without launching any apps I am fine...but if I have anything else running, I get a hard lock, or kicked into win2k and a missing .dll dialog box. I have to reboot to fix this.

I think that we need to check for patches that might address this. I am running whatever the default install version is. I'll get back to you once I try to patch this.

I'm kinda glad it's not just me who's having problems with DX8. I installed it and it basically killed my DVD player (which used DX7). Since my laptop is also my VCR, I had to get rid of DX8. At least now I know that it would not have helped my computer run NFS 5. Unfortunately I wound up having to format and re-install, thankfully it was a new computer so nothing vital on the HDD yet. BTW, I tried installing DX7 over DX8, it was a no-go, apparantly the install for DX will not overwrite newer files.

1Sik, you aimbot! Nice to see you on the forums. I'd advise you to image your hard drive and do a clean install. If it's an upgrade-only version of W2K, just install 98 or whatever first. If you need some imaging freeware, PM me in ETG's #clan_re and give me your email addy, and I will hook you up after I get home.

Will do Void 🙂 Btw I wish I didn't have to be posting here with this bs=P. I don't think reinstalling the upgrade is going to do it. My pc ran fine with 98. My wife's was brand new. I think I will try wiping and loading the full version if I can get my hands on a cd. And I will leave DX 7 on when I do it.
