OK, here's the history:

On our anniversary, my wife and I left our son with my parents and headed out of town for an evening, driving her 96 Ford Contour. Trip went fine (on the way there). The trip back was pretty uneventful, until we were 1 block from my parents' place. We were waiting for traffic to clear so we could make a left onto their street, around 10:30 PM, and a couple of kids in a light truck or SUV rear-ended us. Knocked out our rear passenger lights and crumpled the trunk, then they took off before we could get a license number or anything! Fortunately, they cracked their radiator something major, liquid was just pouring out from their grill. The next couple of weeks, my wife had a very sore arm, doctor said it was not serious, just some tight muscles from the impact.

Anyway, everything turned out pretty well, overall:
Her car only has a $250 deductible. My car's is $1000. Our tax return is more than enough to cover it.
Nobody was seriously injured.
Our baby was not in the car.
And, best of all, they told us 2-3 weeks for repair when we dropped it off last Friday. My wife got a call today saying it's ready. :D I'm so excited. Her sister had a baby about 4 hours away and we are leaving tomorrow to go see them, and we'll have the car with cruise control back just in time!

And one of the best things, if you can understand it, is that I'm not bitter toward the kids who hit us. The first couple of days it was all I could think of. We followed their trail (the radiator fluid was easy to follow while it was fresh), and I had thoughts of physical and/or legal violence, but after a couple of days I realized that it was consuming me. We gave the cops and the community all the information we had, and I let it go. I figured, if anything was going to happen from that point, it would happen, and I did not need to worry about it. And, honestly, I feel a lot better about it.

Who's saying we didn't? :)

They just had a head start. I had just gotten out of the car and around to check the damage when they took off. Chased them , but they were already about 2 blocks away and out of sight. Chased them for a while but after a mile or two of winding thru residential areas I figured I'd better get back and phone the cops, then my brother (martial arts instructor) and I went out and followed their trail.

hell yeah mister T!! A woman rear ended me once, and took off, i chased her down, even though my seats were reclines all the way from the impact. I called the police while i was chasing her, and she was driving a POS 1988 Buick, so i caught her rather quickly.

If I were you I would have chased them for a bit, although at a slow, safe speed. Last year my dad was hit in the drivers side in a hit and run accident. The guy was drunk and didn't even stop at the light. Luckily both cars weren't going very fast and my dad's car was still driveable. My dad chased the him for about 4 blocks until the guy got to his house. By that time the police were on their way (thank goodness for cell phones!). They charged the guy with DUI, hit and run, resisting arrest and assult on a police officer. I think he got at least 6 months in jail, his license suspended for 2 years and his car was impounded. I hope the authorities at least caught the punks who hit you palad. They deserve everything that's coming to them and probably a whole lot more!

Put a call into local repair shops to see if any SUV has been brought in for repairs and such.

BTW, did you get this repaired at the dealer or some other shop? I'd be very weary of a 2-3 week thing that only takes a week to get done
