Make sure to run DrakFont and import those Windows TrueType fonts into Mandrake. It will make your web experience with Konqueror MUCH better.

I hate to sound like a true Linux geek, but Mandrake is a little bloated.
I'd only dabbled with redhat a bit before jumping into Mandrake. It did what I needed it to do (X windows programming for a class) but it really began to feel bloated after a while. Too many useless things are kinda thrown into it. Anyone have a recommendation for a not so bloated, but still feature filled Linux distribution?

Oh great, it's turning into a "which distribution is better" discussion. Can we compare the playstation2, gamecube and xbox next please?

I think Mandrake is great for a first time linux experience. Maybe even for the first year. But if it feels too bloated, then Slackware is the next logical step.

But I must admit I've never been near Debian. I have installed RedHat, Mandrake, and Slackware.

Mandrake 8.1 is cool. Can do just about everything without hitting the command line, with a buttload of software for free :) But yeah Mandrake feels about as bloated as Win98 :disgust: Guess need to either upgrade hardware or try a different distro.

actually Mandrake feels as bloated as WinXP does. Which is pretty damn bloated. Who the hell needs half the sh!t they put in there?

I dunno if I've got the linux geek nuts to try out slackware though...it sounds like getting it running is a giant pain in the ass.

But yes, I barely go into my linux partition any more...there's literally no reason since I don't program in linux. I play games, type papers, surf the web...all stuff that Windows seems to be best for.

I hear ya, Windows is easier since I know and support it already. But the point has come where I am tired for paying for a new OS/office suite every two years (no I don't pirate) just to keep up. That and Linux is easier than ever to use, so I figure why not start learning now?

I thought slackware was easier (as a newbie) than mandrake and redhat. Debian is also nice. In Debian I even had to setup my network card :D

Congrats though, should be a pretty easy switch. . .

I found Slackware to be easier for a newbie, as well. Also, it feels like you actually learn something--that's why you want to install linux right, not just as a desktop replacement?

The only problem is that it might be a little harder to get all of your devices to work in Slackware, Mandrake tends to be more automated for that--but then again, you learn this way.

Doing more will either force you to learn or make you feel like a bitch so you go back to Windows. I sat there and learned (slowly and with plenty of "cool down" breaks). That is why I recommend Slackware.

YAY!
Three smacks in the head for mike!
Not only did mandrake not recognize my network card, I had no idea how to make it work, so I decided to boot into windows and download the newest version of Redhat, since I was hearing that it was prety good and not as bloated as mandrake!
In addition to that, I also made the mistake of not choosing custom install. BIG MISTAKE. Now grub(the bootloader) doesn't have an option for windows so I can't get to my windows partion.
I tried formatting the partition that mandrake was on and installing 2k, didn't work, grub was still there, I tried installing an older version of redhat (7.0, I think) and making an option to boot into windows, still didn't work. So I'm thinking that I'm going to need to do a clean format :|
I'm not typing this up from linux, let alone Konkorer, I am typing this up from and XP laptop.
Oh well, that is what you get for choosing the standard install, as opposed to taking the time to actualy configure your system. I think once I get my 2K partition working again, I'm gonna download the newest ISO of redhat and try again.
