w00t! Liquor laws finally changed!!!

This r0x! The archaic liquor laws here in BC have finally been changed... I particularly like the "bars can stay open until 4 am" one. 🙂

Haha I remember when I was in SLC airport and I went to a bar ... I had to a) pay extra for a glass of ICE with my liquor and b) get it from a DIFFERENT bar. Apparently they can't serve ICE and liquor at the same place? Who knows 😀

Yeah, I've heard about those... We were a bit better, but the laws were very messed up and confusing still. Now they've streamlined everything, and made it much more liberal. This rules.

<< Move to Utah if you want to see some seriously messed up liquor laws. >>

I'll second that, good thing I'm in the military and can get something other than "point" beer. Yeah, there's the state run liquor stores, but the hours for that are very limited.

Minnesota's not much better, but at least you can own and operate a liquor store. No state owned liquor stores (but individual cities can make up their own restrictions, and run "municipal" liquor stores). 30 minutes east in Wisconsin, it's a different world: bacically, if the grocery store or gas station is open, you can buy beer.

Here are a few Utah liquor laws off the top of my head.

Kegs are illegal unless it's in a bar or restaurant

All beer sold in stores other than liquor stores can not be more than 3.2% alcohol.

No double shots in bars.

All hard liquor can not be free poured ever. There has to be a meter on the bottle that won't allow more than 1 ounce

All bars that sell hard liquor have to be a private club with membership fees.

You can not order alcohol alone in a restaurant. You HAVE to have food with it.

Restaurants can't advertise alcohol in any way. You can't say "do you wan't to see the wine list" or anything like that.

There are tons more

Messed up.

We could sell anything in gov't operated liquor stores, and beer and wine only in privately run stores.

You can have double shots, but not triples (but you can just order a few doubles if ya wanted...)

Pubs could serve only liquor, but restaurants had to serve food too (not anymore though)

Kegs are just seen as really big beers 🙂 Heck, I make kegs of beer for customers at work, and I could bring one home for myself tomorrow (actually, I might just do that hehe)

I don't really drink, so I'm not an expert, but here in California:

Liquor stores sell beer, wine, and hard liquor. Grocery stores ell beer, wine and hard liquor, bothof these places can stay open as late as they want. Bars stay open till 2AM, and serve as many shots as you want. Resaurants can sell you only a beer or glas of wine or whatever you like, giving the wine lsit to customers with their menus is normal...

Here in Massachusetts you can only buy beer and hard liquor in liquor stores specifically. You can't run to the supermarket or a convience store and get a six pack of beer in otherwords. Some towns the liquor stores close at 10pm, some at 11pm being the latest. Bars close at 2am at the latest, some of the smaller town bars close up earlier.

In New Hampshire you can buy beer anywhere, gas stations, convenience stores, supermarkets etc. up until 11:45pm. You can only get hard liquor in designated liquor stores. Don't know when the bars close here.

In New York you can get beer anywhere 24 hours a day (nice!). Hard liquor can only be bought at liquor stores, don't know what time they close. Bars are open till 4am I believe.

In Connecticut you can also find beer anywhere but a friend who lives there told me you can't buy any alcohol at all past 8pm!! I don't know when they stop serving in bars and restaurants.

There's the run down of my liquor laws in the states I know of.

Dang........... I'm still on med's not liqour for me for a whilw 🙁 Dang Three parties to go to tomorrow 😛

Cheers,
Aquaman

In Connecticut, the liquor stores close at 8:00 pm and are closed on Sundays and holidays. Bars close at 12:00 am. It sucks.

<< And here in NY sunday cant sell before 12 am. >>

True breakit23, but after drinking on a Saturday night, I'm never up by noon on Sunday 😀

<< Not very restrictive here in NY.

Why would anyone open a bar in Utah?
>>

Because even with those restrictions, they still make money. Remember, not all of Utah is Mormon. I go out there to Park City all the time.

<< Too bad that the law didn't change 6 years ago when we used to own a night club. >>

Which one did you own?

Cheers,
Aquaman

<< Wisconsin, it's a different world: bacically, if the grocery store or gas station is open, you can buy beer. >>

true... true... then you can go downtown, take the miller tour, and get free beer 🙂

<< Which one did you own? >>

It used to be called "Aztec." It's in the corner of that "triangle" by Water St. and Cordova in downtown by Waterfront. Our family friend bought it from us and changed the name. Not sure how it's doing now.

I'm not exactly sure why my dad sold the club, but it partly has to do with the heavy taxation and strict laws. It was also a very exhausting job for him.
