So about a 2 years ago, the Home Base just down the street went out of business. The building sat around for a long time, and finally the Home Depot that was just down the street a little further took over the building and moved. Kinda funny, since the close proximity of the Home Depot is probably what made the Home Base cave in the first place.

Anyway, so then the old Home Depot building was empty for a long time... the site is home to Portland's first Krispy Kreme, and they've recently put in a Quiznos, amongst other things.

Well, they started working on the old Home Depot building a few months back. Of course, the "I wonder what it's going to be...." debate always follows. My fiancee and I like to guess and see who ends up being right. ;) Anyway, the only thing I could think of that would go into such a big building was... Wal-Mart. We were like, "It would be awesome if it was a 24hr Supercenter!", since we don't have one in Portland.

Low and behold, it's a a freakin' Wal-Mart. Don't know if it's a Supercenter or not, but they just put the temporary signs up.

Now we won't have to go to the Wal-Mart about 2 miles away to get catfood & whatever else. It'll be within walking distance. ;)

For as much flack as Wallyworld gets, low prices = in my book, employee abuse or not.

:p

We have a WinCo just down the street from the soon-to-be Wal-Mart... lol

We were comming back with a load of groceries when we noticed the new signs, actually.

City evolution is kinda cool.

I doubt it?! That would be crazy... I suppose it's possible though.

Seems weird amidst all the holiday advertising Eastport has been doing. One of the main attractions is Wal-Mart.

I haven't seen any Eastport advertising, but then, I don't get to the east side very often since I moved to Tanasbourne.

Spring 2005.

Which was really weird when I noticed it said that... Most stores are open lickity split after being built. The new Bank of America and Walgreens across the street from Home Depot were open just a couple of weeks after the walls were up. I wonder what the reason for holding off so long is. Tax related maybe?

Now the newest building on the Home Depot side of 82nd & Johnson Creek Blvd, right next to the Wells Fargo, is going to be a Unitus Credit union.. they haven't broken ground yet though.

This area is seeing some major development.....

Of Walmart or GI Joes?

Walmart - Fsck no, it's still a relatively new store. I think 5-6 years old and it's always busy with ghetto Portlanders.

GI Joes - Probably. I wonder what will happen to that building? They should demolish it and make more room for Century Theatres parking.

Wooting and WalMart are not two things/activities that are allowed to be mentioned together.

You get a zero.

I don't have a problem with Walmart, it's just that they picked two unbelivably crappy locations to place their stores here in town. It makes driving the three miles to the store a 20 minute long ordeal.

Thanks to this thread, I no longer have any desire to visit Portland.

Well, to be honest I never had any desire in the first place but this sealed it. ;)

I've never seen someone get so excited about a Wal-Mart opening up as the OP is. :D :D

It's not really that we were excited that it's Wal-Mart, just that we were right in our at-the-time seemingly ridiculous guess that it was going to be a Wal-Mart.

It's just interesting to see the area change. It's going to be even more congested... lol

82nd and Johnson Creek Blvd was ranked like #4 in the top 10 most dangerous local streets, heh.

Don't like Wal-Mart.
They used to be all "Made in America" when competing with K-Mart.
Now its all "Made from China" and screw with their suppliers to get the lowest possible price.

I would agree with that.
